[Sc-aquaponics] Office hours, fish fact sheet, import reg changes for Indiana

All,

Have a pond facility? Attached is an old fish fact sheet on inventory assessment that still holds mostly true today. Depending on species and experience, some producers do rely more heavily on feeding response, although as noted this can be lead to variable results as well.

My open office hours are curtailed again this week as we continue to plan for the North Central Aquaculture Conference in Wisconsin in early 2022. I will hold office hours today from 11am-12pm Eastern, but as always, feel free to reach out anytime if you have questions or want to chat.

Additionally, to reduce additional emails, please note that Indiana just changed their import regulations regarding species that need to be tested for VHS. See below a cut/paste. I highlighted that some species (including fathead minnows) were added to the list, while others were removed (including channel catfish). Thanks to Jones Fish for forwarding the information over to me.

Matthew Smith is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Animal Health Advisory

24 August 2021
Changes in Fish Species List for State-Issued Permit

24 August 2021

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) issues entry permits for all aquaculture species on the viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) strain IVb (VHS IVb) susceptible species list imported into the state. This species list has been updated to reflect current science about the disease.

VHS IVb Susceptible Species List (August 2021) Added species in bold italics.

Black crappie, bluegill, bluntnose minnow, brown bullhead, chinook salmon, emerald shiner, fathead minnow, freshwater drum, American gizzard shad, lake cisco, lake trout, lake whitefish, largemouth bass, muskellunge, northern pike, pumpkinseed, rainbow trout, rock bass, round goby, smallmouth bass, spottail shiner, striped bass, walleye, white bass, white perch, yellow perch

Beginning January 1, 2022, added species will be required to have an entry permit issued by BOAH.

Species removed from the list include: brown trout, burbot, channel catfish, shorthead redhorse, silver redhorse, and trout perch. Beginning January 1, 2022, these species will NOT need an entry permit.

Entry Permit

A BOAH Pre-Entry Permit Application must be completed and submitted to BOAH at least 3 regular business days in advance of the proposed date of movement with all required documentation. This application is available online: www.in.gov/boah/species-information/aquaculture/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Flnks.gd*2Fl*2FeyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJlbWFpbCI6ImNocmlzQGpvbmVzZmlzaC5jb20iLCJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoiMTAwIiwic3Vic2NyaWJlcl9pZCI6IjEwOTgxNjU0OTciLCJsaW5rX2lkIjoiMTU0NjIxNTAxNSIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpkaWdlc3QiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwOi8vd3d3LmluLmdvdi9ib2FoL3NwZWNpZXMtaW5mb3JtYXRpb24vYXF1YWN1bHR1cmUvIiwiYnVsbGV0aW5faWQiOiIyMDIxMDgyNC40NDk4NTgzMSJ9.9kolhRb03SNS8PWHBe3PI1mxpeXmmE4PhJgbT8CzwvM&data=04*7C01*7Cckirk*40jonesfish.com*7Ce56b6dd7e19144c222d908d9678f25b2*7C3fbc3ee9bc5c411a909ce2a2ef493750*7C1*7C0*7C637654686778852602*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C1000&sdata=44sg44tD5TOEzcbd*2FPBiWvIW4Y1ncPTIdbctg4ZY7UU*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJQ!!KGKeukY!gls9-M32H7gt22lucSYcThe0VLogZ7KuTX2fepYT_r-KiMJ1twL2PZIa3tcraiMhqZ1_HQ$>

Testing

Testing is only required for viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) susceptible species. Susceptible species must test negative for VHS IF originating from the Great Lakes states and provinces: Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, and Quebec.

About VHS

VHS is a reportable disease, which means it must be reported within 48 hours of diagnosis to BOAH. To date, VHS has not been detected in any fish originating from Indiana's inland waters. Help protect Indiana's fish from VHS.
