In this presentation, food safety expert Jim Hollyer discusses essential on-farm food safety practices, from construction to post-harvest processing.

The guidelines are meant to assist aquaponics farmers, as well as other aquaculture and agriculture producers throughout the CTSA region and beyond, incorporate Good Aquaculture & Agriculture Practices (GAPs) into their production. The 12-minute video was filmed at Mari's Gardens, the largest commercial aquaponics farm on Oahu, and is being released as part of the CTSA "Aquaculture in the Pacific Islands" video series. Food safety is an essential aspect of farming. According to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) 2013 Food Code, foodborne diseases cause an estimated 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 1,000 deaths in the United States each year.
