[Sc-aquaponics] FW: Aquaponics within city limits

I will add that here in Lexington, Kentucky,
FoodChain<http://www.foodchainlex.org>,
a nonprofit committed to providing education and demonstration of
sustainable indoor food production has been operating an indoor 7,000
gallon aquaponics system inside of an old abandoned bread factory near
downtown for nearly a year. From a zoning perspective the building is
surrounded on all sides by residential neighborhoods, but the building
itself is zoned industrial. When working with the city to determine our
use, they were comfortable with the label of "factory" for our indoor farm.
There was nothing on the books that they could find that would preclude
indoor aquaponics operations within the city. Furthermore, our zoning codes
for our merged county government already allow for beekeeping and urban
chicken keeping and there has been much discussion over the last few years
about altering them to allow for hoofed animals as well, though nothing has
passed yet.

All the best,
Becca
