Efficient UV Disinfection? Misinformation?

Article by Stephen Zimmer, President of Emperor Aquatics, Inc.

Manufacturing, marketing, or selling anything for twenty years should be enough to qualify a person as an authority on those products. I believe my twenty-plus-years qualifies me as an authority on UV equipment. I must admit though, my expertise related to UV systems is primarily associated with ALSS and Aquaculture applications. With that said, I believe I can offer helpful information to those with questions related to UV and fish-culture. I can identify and solve some of the costly problems plaguing the Aquaculture Industry in regards to UV Technology.

The objective of this article is to identify key cost factors associated with UV, to warn of misinformation in the industry, and to establish useful questions to address while purchasing UV equipment.

  Industry Challenges Related to UV

Regardless of Industry segment, many of the UV systems purchased for use in Aquaculture quickly become problematic because the information used to make the decision was incorrect, incomplete, or irrelevant. Some unsuspecting customers purchase equipment because a design-engineering firm specified it for them, but too often those equipment costs are inflated by unnecessary and expensive options. On the opposite end of the spectrum, some UV system purchases are heavily influenced by cost and the equipment selected may not coincide with the actual needs of the application. One constant factor in all the problem purchases is a customer that's forced to decide without the proper information, without manufacturer guidance before AND after the sale.

  EQUIPMENT COST

Most Aquaculture clients are very cost-sensitive, because they work with budgetary restraints. They're faced with a tough challenge: purchasing equipment that best suits their specific application without exceeding the budget. To make matters more difficult, most UV suppliers only sell "off the shelf" equipment, which requires the customer to adapt their application to fit the cookie-cutter UV system. Another financial hurtle, as mentioned earlier, is the design-engineer's tendency to load up the specified UV system with unnecessary options that inflate the total cost. It's not uncommon for these difficulties to force the client to drop the UV system from their project, when in actuality it may be the equipment they needed most.

Too often correct equipment sizing is jeopardized due to a UV supplier's lack of expertise with the technology, typically resulting in an undersized UV system purchase which renders the equipment ineffective. Regardless of the UV brand considered, always protect yourself by following the SafeGUARD UV 5-Point UV Sizing Protocol<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00172BEZ4Y_Dy92PBVn6jkct9ReIiGwhhqFy5Utv1IpgDxKxSj6gaonjlpBvRR-8IhevmL-ZJVD37cvZ9MsxaCD2rh1vETaeoDftcZjJSdwThQlMWBb9quharF4ePCW5vm2wPAeAdi7d4yWmr_ZT0kisrfi46T4tVpflA-4J3jHoKfzUgZu1PHKlpilA-Ig0wrMpY6Vwd5MNqh-nIYs9uFLHiJNjkC3q5Dv> (pages 8 & 9 inside the 2013 catalog).

  PRODUCT EDUCATION

Conflicting UV system manufacturer claims are the greatest cause of public confusion regarding UV. This confusion leads to poor purchase decisions, hidden operating costs, or worse, equipment failure. Misleading or incomplete information ultimately causes skepticism towards the technology. Bad information is a real and widespread problem for UV in Aquaculture!

  For example:

Compare proven operating cost variances between Low-Pressure (LP) and Medium-Pressure (MP) lamp technologies. MP UV systems cost up to 3x's more to operate (power consumption) than a comparable LP UV with the same fluence (dose). MP UV systems are more complicated and, therefore, more difficult to operate than LP UV systems. Despite these facts, large RAS design-engineer firms continue to specify MP UV systems. Why ?

  The Answer:

Typically, they do not understand the technology well enough to sell it and they put too much credence into what could be false manufacturer claims.

Are the following claims misrepresenting fact?
  You decide.

  1. Atlantium Technologies Ltd. Israel cites a NYSERDA (New York State Research and Development Authority) UV Validation of "Adenovirus". The Atlantium advertisement claims "MP UV lamps yielding 4-log Reduction at half the UV dose required by LP lamp systems." If you read the NYSERDA report No. 12-13 (Section 3.2)<http://www.emperoraquatics.com/12-13-the-uv-validation-and-research-center-of-new-york.pdf> it specifically reads "UV disinfection at doses typically used in water treatment is very effective (4-log inactivation) against almost all known pathogenic viruses tested, with the one exception of adenoviruses.

The Atlantium advertisement<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00172BEZ4Y_Dy-aBQKg5k2Rmbj8nvn8aoP77EmQ9vuzudQIQ5WCQTTXzSPdrDfPJduI5Y0xJUVvIe3hdnH65PsLnAOxAHNX18kAzHHvZFgy2gikfSzqm7gfXdWN1ffSTGROgxBOkqceRKk9iUHvcmSrXvh4ezvWQjUlA5k2wsN63GGW61GuPsj11cat4mu-i4ys> was printed in an Aquaculture publication. So what do Adenoviruses have to do with Aquaculture? Nothing. Do Adenoviruses threaten Aquaculture applications? No. Can you justify spending significantly more money sizing UV equipment for a pathogen that has nothing to do with fish-culture? The Fact is, NYSERDA refers to Adenoviruses as "one exception." What is Atlantium's intent making a generalized claim such as they did?

The established Germicidal Action Spectrum (240-280 nm) is accepted by all water and wastewater Industries as the most efficient spectral-group at overall pathogen inactivation. Furthermore, the same 230 nm spectral-group identified in the NYSERDA Adenovirus paper is also identified in the paper "By-Product Formation During UV Disinfection of A Pre-treated Surface Water<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00172BEZ4Y_Dy_aUjIByEtogPYKfKGM-b40zcc7hTNxeZRsJ6c4-yXPFj9muMgA13O99JqhKKl_W8bHHAH2H3W-xp0bALqJJ01o7Qb1ILBkvOp316pNKzmhzBXeBbEwHW_McYZJWUyDAJwz9M8ruht5Isdn88MRJprA2k5aMEi1nZg-clk92Ep3bPldBFL4LSZy>" as creating up to .1 mg/l NO2.

Shouldn't this information be shared, especially with those operating RAS?

  1. ETS (Engineered Treatment Systems, LLC, Beaver Dam, WI.) printed an article supporting MP UV technology<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00172BEZ4Y_Dy8a9FYlhRQ_m6HmX4pqFjgdcU6jIwGELFU6i3jaRURd0mjTQ4Tn1nwpAmugr9M1SEUYyFpSRphAlgS8OOcEE_9NBiqbU_pzmQDTGG2rSNmzVay7ZhRlBr1oEyH-ZC51xPvVUtKQ2ouW93WQKF4rykdLSlj1_90Nowyw_Y88LHZKBQ==>, claiming its benefits over LP (Aquatic International Magazine / May 2010). In the Sept. 2010 Aquatics International Magazine issue, respected UV authority Dr. James Bolton refutes ETS's claims<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00172BEZ4Y_Dy8Sfp6u62NI2D88Bhr24YSTa6Cxmxgav3oGBcujmv4TyxC1dEfMj3bSLg1SL-hCupdbzOvusUufLO8-AcotFg55-FAGReH77lqkao3abMN2Z-ueQrO0t80NdAMtBtnd553HAbNDkkQjivkSt9Su5JV4OqSd0VewBHJFw_2zGyirZQ==>. Dr. Bolton refers to ETS's claims as "misleading and false". Here are the two articles as they appeared in Aquatics International May and September 2010 publications.

The two marketing examples provided above speak for themselves and we leave you, the reader, to form your own opinions. Unfortunately, these are but a few examples of many. We acknowledge the critical need for independent technology research related to pathogen UV inactivation (spectral absorption characteristics), but until such research is completed we must only follow the substantiated information available. It is important to mention that all pathogens are unique and require individual testing related to spectral absorption, especially wavelengths outside the established Germicidal Action Spectrum.

  Manufacturer Guidance

The difference between an uninformed buyer and an informed buyer is vulnerability. An informed buyer is prepared to make a wise purchase. Many Aquaculture UV systems are purchased without considering critical factors associated with the application's needs. As we suggested earlier, regardless of what UV brand you prefer, we encourage you to follow the SafeGUARD UV 5-Point UV Sizing Protocol<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=00172BEZ4Y_Dy92PBVn6jkct9ReIiGwhhqFy5Utv1IpgDxKxSj6gaonjlpBvRR-8IhevmL-ZJVD37cvZ9MsxaCD2rh1vETaeoDftcZjJSdwThQlMWBb9quharF4ePCW5vm2wPAeAdi7d4yWmr_ZT0kisrfi46T4tVpflA-4J3jHoKfzUgZu1PHKlpilA-Ig0wrMpY6Vwd5MNqh-nIYs9uFLHiJNjkC3q5Dv> (pages 8 & 9 inside the 2013 catalog). Doing so will get the right questions answered, such as, identifying the target pathogen which establishes the required Fluence, evaluating the application's %UVT, selecting the best UV vessel material based on fresh or seawater, and learning the total cost of operation.

Do not purchase UV equipment without documentation on the estimated Fluence and the source of the calculations.
[UV Clalc Sheet]

Additionally, for greater assurance, request a list of 5 Aquaculture referrals that have been using the manufacturer's UV systems for 5-plus-years. Contact the referrals and get their appraisal; ask them to rate the UV manufacturer from 1 - 10 on their level of guidance as well as the degree of operator-friendliness of their equipment.

  Cost of Ownership

UV system Cost of Ownership includes the costs of Annual Replacement Parts, Power Consumption, and the Labor required for servicing the equipment.

Each SafeGUARD UV System is designed with Cost of Ownership in mind. Replacement parts are readily accessible across the globe. SafeGUARD UV Systems consume 3x's less electricity than MP UV's and all models can be serviced easily by in-house facility staff rather than requiring expensive outside contractors. All components are selected based on reliability and cost to create an operator-friendly package.

In contrast, it is typical for competitor UV systems, both LP and MP, to cost significantly more to operate. Other LP UV manufacturers often use sensitive, more expensive, ballasts (see example below) with no additional benefit than the more robust/reliable ballasts which cost far less. Both LP and MP UV systems can be extremely complicated; over-engineered for Aquaculture. Additionally, MP UV systems use lamps that generate extreme heat (1,600°F/870°C) which tends to foul the quartz sleeve (see example below) and dramatically reduce the system's effectiveness.

  Ballast example:

$1,217.60 (operates 2-lamps)
[Two-Lamp Ballast]

$171.52 (operates 1-lamp)
[One-Lamp Ballast]

  Quartz Sleeve example:

MP UV customer reports excessive quartz sleeve maintenance (monthly)
due to extreme heat generated from the MP UV lamps.

[Atlantium UV Systems]

  Operator-Friendly

The term Operator-Friendly suggests many things: easy and reliable operation, easy maintenance, and readily available and reasonably priced replacement parts. Those are all factors in a UV system's overall cost-of-ownership which should be considered at the time of purchase.

Many UV manufacturers, both MP and LP, tout the "Operator-Friendly" advantage for their equipment; unfortunately, they're not always telling the truth.

For example, with MP UV suppliers, they are quick to point out that their systems save the customer time and money because their UV's use fewer lamps than LP UV systems. But, what they fail to mention is that their equipment is often much more complicated, making glassware change-outs more difficult and time consuming. Additionally, MP UV lamps require more frequent replacement (shorter end-of-lamp life) than LP UV lamps. Then, consider the problem of extreme MP UV lamp operating temperatures. At 1,600°F/870°C, solids bake onto the quartz sleeves and drastically reduce the system's effectiveness (Note: LP Hq Amalgam lamps operate at 180°F; heat is not an issue). Some MP UV system owners use quartz sleeve wiping systems as a remedy, but they're useless against fouled quartz sleeves and are not a long-term solution. Wipers are proven to fail and tend to make system maintenance much more complicated.

LP UV systems can be equally as complicated, especially with high-flow systems. Large-scale UV treatment (above 1,000 GPM/3,785 LPM - 60 mJ/cm2) typically requires open-channel UV systems. Currently, there are two styles available: horizontal-rack style and vertical lamp-field design.

Horizontal-rack style configurations cost significantly more (as much as 4x's our vertical-lamp field LP UV systems) and are notoriously more difficult to work with due to the lamp orientation and rack-mounting. Servicing these systems can be dangerous, especially with systems using multiple racks of 5 foot-long lamps. Horizontal-rack style UV system customers are often forced to use hoists to help minimize the danger to staff and lower the probability of glass breakage.

Considering all these factors, does that "Operator-Friendly" label hold up?
