Charlie Shultz Finishes His Thesis Research Study (From the KSU Facebook Page

"Evaluation of Grow Lighting Options for
Indoor Aquaponic Production"

Charlie Shultz finished his second trial for
evaluating four types of grow lights (LED,
Metal Halide, Induction, and Fluorescent)
on various crops under aquaponic
conditions. Trial one with Bibb Lettuce was
recently completed nearly one month ago.
Trial two also consisted of four individual
systems (reps) with four light options
(treatments) using Nile Tilapia and Basil.
Each system consisted of approximately
three square meters of plant growing area
and fish were supplied 180g of feed daily.
At this rate (60g of feed per square meter
of plant area per day) nutrient production
from fish waste and uptake from plants
remained in balance during the trial. The
four week basil grow-out trial was finished
August 1, 2013.
Basil production data will be compared by
treatment and an energy analysis will be
conducted to evaluate the energy costs of
growing indoor aquaponic crops.
The harvest weights of the Nile Tilapia was
also recorded from all four systems.
