Here is a brief update from one of our beginning aquaponics practitioners about their marketing efforts. I think there is some good information here. I recommended that they check out a program that OSU Extension developed called Market Ready http://directmarketing.osu.edu/content/marketready.htm . It teaches about many of the issues brought up in the email. Although they don't have any upcoming training workshops, the last one is recorded and available as a webinar.

Aloha Friends!
Today was our third farmers market.
it was a wonderful hot summer day, finally!
we are gaining traction in the market.
already we have "regular" customers,
even if they have enough of their own lettuce,
they stop by to say how much they like our stuff!!
and
they seem sincere
we crossed a big milestone today
for us at least,
we sold out!!!! and took in just shy of $200.00 ($ 199.50)
todays market was differant than the past two,
after the inital surge for 90 minutes or so there were NO customers
and so I just talked to the other vendors about this and that.
the soft greens are so light weight that I kind of stripped the system to have enough packages.
speaking of packages
we went to the local supply store to look for better packaging for our product.
during the week I took a few "bags" of greens to the local resturants.
at the talk with the second chef,
I realised that my presentation was poor at best.
so we spent some time looking for better packaging.
alas,
there are no packaging stores for growers in NE Ohio.
so we did thest we could a bought some "bakery" type packages.
well the impact was immediate and anything they picked up they bought.
and I have an appointment with the director of food and beverage with a huge concern this next week.
he was impressed with the product and the packaging was professional.
Tomorrow we redo the system
take baby plants to their new home and fork seedlings into the system
next week is a huge festival in town
the anual Beach Glass Festival
the streets will be closed, and 25,000 out of out of towners will invade for the privlidge of buying beach glass jewlery
will this warrant more product or less
stay tunned for updates
talk soon
Max
