Some of you are aware that I have classroom duties each January-early May. Late in the semester, those duties are all-consuming. I'm thus now rushing to keep up with you...and with my own schedule. I have been doing some on-the-water trainings for Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Program events this spring. I did some pond training for Soil and Water district technicians earlier this month and aquatic invasive species management training for the Ohio Department of Transportation the month before. Advocated for water stewardship at an Ohio Dance symposium (via this intriguing program: https://www.globalwaterdancescolumbus.org/, https://globalwaterdances.org/). I have already spoken at some public pond events this spring and have several more on the horizon into the summer. Of course, you're always welcome to attend public events and offer your in-person "howdy." Some immediately looming: * 14 May-Defiance Co.'s pond clinic has passed, just after all my grading duties for the semester had wrapped and just before I drove to Michigan for an aquatic science conference. Attendance was substantial, and all was good fun. If you happened to have been there, I hope you said "howdy." * 2 June-Preble Co.'s pond clinic details are front and center here: http://www.prebleswcd.org/ * 9 June, 5:15-7:45-The event will be held at a large and deep borrow-pit pond: Shawk Pond, 2364 Parcher Rd, Bucyrus, OH. RSVP no later than 6 June by phone at 419-562-8280 ext. 3 to attend. * 7 or 8 July-Medina Co.'s: details pending. * 16 August-Hancock Co.'s: details pending. * 30 August-Harrison Co.'s: details pending. * 20-22 September-of course, I'll be lecturing each of the three days of OSU's Farm Science Review, and there will be other interesting pond/lake/aquatic science programming on site as well: https://fsr.osu.edu/gwynne-conservation-area. A couple pending online programs in which I have or had some hand: * Tomorrow, 1 June (move fast if you're interested)-harmful algal bloom management: https://uwmadison.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lfKT_HC1TIac8r8dblHfCw * 14 June-Walleye vision in green and murky water: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2022/06/14/c3uf6/freshwater-science Of course, all of you who engage in pond/lake related programs (especially publicly accessible programs) are welcome to share word via this list. I look forward to hearing from you here. My site visits are ramping up in the wake of COVID. If having me visit your pond/lake site, speak for your HOA or its pond-/lake-management committee, etc. would benefit your management efforts, please do drop a line. And finally, don't forget that-even if my calendar (or travel budget) won't allow me to visit your site in person-I still maintain my Zoom meeting "space." We can get a lot of useful pond-management consultation done via Zoom, especially if there's something on site to show me live using your portable device. Dr. Zuzana Bohrerova was one of the three founders and moderators of this list. In case any of you personally know her (you may have met her at the project-related event in Medina Co. that spawned this list), she has left Ohio State University for a prestigious scientist position with the Ohio Department of Health. I will sincerely miss her quality professional activities as an in-house colleague, but am pleased for her pending successes in a position for which she is well suited. Be well out there, Zuzana! And finally finally, some of you know that I moonlight as a classical musician. I'll be busking to represent the Columbus Guitar Society at the WOSU tent at the Columbus Arts Festival spottily 10-12 June. C'mon by. Offer howdy. Support art and local artists. This is a big one among Ohio's art festivals: https://www.columbusartsfestival.org/ And be well out there yourselves, E [The Ohio State University] Eugene C.
