We're back after our COVID-induced hiatus! We ran this non-credit workshop for 13 consecutive years without a single low-enrollment cancellation. Now in its 14th run (and 16th year), I am very pleased to offer Stone Lab's Workshop on Fish-Sampling Techniques of Ohio's State Agencies in collaboration with staff biologists at the Ohio EPA Division of Surface Water and ODNR Division of Wildlife. Our goals in offering this workshop are twofold: 1) to make college students in aquatic fields more competitive for seasonal fisheries positions with natural resource agencies and 2) to provide our Ohio state agencies with a better trained, entry-level workforce. Participants will gain experience with trawls, gill nets, fyke nets, and two types of electrofishing gear. This year, the workshop runs 8-9 October 2022 at OSU's F.T. Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie. Total fee is $300 and includes all instruction as well as room and meals for one night and two days on the island. Participation is limited to nine students. Undergraduates to have registered and paid by the 23 September deadline will be given preferential enrollment. While preferential enrollment is given to undergraduate students, anybody over the age of 18 is welcome to apply (applicants not currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program will be placed on a wait list until a 23 September deadline). We usually run at or near capacity, so do enroll at your earliest convenience. In addition, the Ohio Chapter of the American Fisheries Society will once again offer generous scholarship support to completely cover the enrollment cost of up to two qualifying undergraduate students. I will contact paid enrollees with details on the 23 September deadline. I will also share information on the lab's COVID requirements of its students at that time. Feel free to distribute this note wherever you deem it appropriate to do so. Club officers, please share with your membership. Faculty, please share with your students and peers as appropriate.
