As in recent times, it will take place on the OSU Campus at French Field House.

I am again chair of judging for the outstanding physics awards sponsored by the Ohio-region Section of APS (OS/APS) and the Southern Ohio Section of AAPT (SOS/AAPT).

Every year we seem to get many entrants (we had approximately 150 last year). I estimate we will need in the neighborhood of 30 judges again this year.

We meet early, around 8, and begin judging at around 9, finishing by about 11:30. Everyone but me is done before noon and can leave.

If you've volunteered before, you know how much fun it is to see what the entrants come in with (barring a few that shouldn't be there, of course, but somehow sneak in). If you haven't, volunteer now and join the fun.

Please note that this is not a request from the Ohio Academy of Science, but from OS/APS and SOS/AAPT for a sponsored prize. You cannot judge for the Academy if you volunteer to judge for us. This year, we will have up to $1000 to give to awardees. We make awards in two tiers: seventh through ninth grade and tenth through twelfth grade. In previous years, we have usually given three awards at each level. Occasionally, we found that we had essentially ties for third place, etc. With the additional money, we are able to allow such ties.

At any rate, please volunteer your time as a judge on Saturday 5 May 2012 by replying to this email. It is fun. It is rewarding. You won't regret it.

Regards,

Gordon Aubrecht

OS/APS and SOS/AAPT State Science Day physics prize judge coordinator
