<p>I am pleased to announce that the 51st Alpheus Smith Lecture will be given by David Wineland<a></a> on Thursday, April 4, 2013. Please reserve this date.</p>

<p>Dave is a NIST<a></a> (Boulder, Co) physicist who has made major advances in the laser cooling and trapping of ions, quantum computation and fundamental measurement. He is the recipient of many of the most prestigious awards in atomic and laser physics and
shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics with Serge Haroche<a></a>. The prize was for "ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems".</p>
