<p class="MsoNormal">Dan W. Butin is an associate professor and founding dean of the school of education at Merrimack College and the executive director of the
<i>Center</i> <i>for</i> <i>Engaged</i> <i>Democracy</i>. He is the author and editor of more than seventy academic publications, including the book
<i>Service—Learning</i> <i>in</i> <i>Theory</i> <i>and</i> <i>Practice:</i> <i>The</i>
<i>Future</i> <i>of</i> <i>Community</i> <i>Engagement</i> <i>in</i> <i>Higher</i>
<i>Education</i> (2010), which won the 2010 Critics Choice Book Award of the American Educational Studies Association<i>.</i> Dr. Butin's research focuses on issues of educator preparation and policy, and community engagement. This event is co-sponsored by
the Service-Learning Initiative, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Bringing Learning to Life Service-Learning Grant, and the College of Education and Human Ecology.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The 2012 Service-Learning and Community Engagement conference is being sponsored by the OSU $B!H(BBringing Learning to Life$B!I(B service-learning grant that Education Professor Valerie Kinloch directs, in conjunction with Columbus City Schools,
the Columbus Education Association, and the OSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The conference will bring together students, teachers, teacher educators, researchers, school and university administrators, and community members to explore intersections of
service-learning initiatives and community engagements across K-16 settings. An opening talk and reception with Dr. Dan Butin of Merrimack College is scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 4:30PM in the College Commons Room (Ramseyer Hall #260). Keynote
addresses, presentations, and demonstrations will occur on Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Columbus Convention Center. A closing keynote with Dr. Kevin Kumashiro of the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as featured panels, research roundtables, and
a teacher-student-community partner demonstration will close the conference on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Audubon Center. For more information, visit the conference website at
