Course Spotlight
HDFS 5892: Special Topics in Adolescent Development
Deanna Wilkinson's Special Topics course takes students out of the classroom and into the Southside of Columbus to focus on positive youth development and effective ways to work with adolescents and families in or near poverty. The first four weeks focus on "preparing for impactful service," and the second four weeks involve "serving and reflecting." Students engage in tutoring, coaching, and working with youth in urban gardening at a summer camp or a drop out recovery high school. Community partners include the Reaching Higher Heights 4-Life Community Care Center, Local Matters, and the Kossuth Street Garden. The course is being offered during the Summer 1 session, May 11th-July 1st, and is open to both undergraduates and graduates.

This nine member, neighborhood based AmeriCorps VISTA program focuses on building capacity with various community organizations that serve Franklinton, one of Columbus' most impoverished communities in which many residents struggle with food insecurity. The program is hosted at Franklinton Gardens, and VISTA members have the opportunity to build partnerships with other agencies, such as Franklinton Development Association, Franklinton Preparatory Academy, and Gladden Community House. Applications are due May 6th.
