Congratulations to this year's Distinguished and Emerging Service-Learning Awardees! On Thursday May 1st, the Office of Outreach and Engagement, the Service-Learning Initiative, and other units came together to celebrate engagement at our annual Outreach and Engagement Recognition Awards. Among those honored were two service-learning projects: Public Health in Action for its well-established record of service-learning success; and Interprofessional Teamwork in Underserved Patient Care for its emerging contributions to service-learning scholarship. Nominate your Service-Learning Students for Arts and Sciences Profile Series If you know a great undergraduate student who has participated in a service-learning course, we want to hear from you! The College of Arts and Sciences is creating a series of student profiles for the Academics Beyond the Classroom section on their website. They are currently seeking students who are interested in being highlighted for their service-learning experience. Building Capacity for Outreach and Engagement Scholarship The Office of Outreach and Engagement will be hosting a series of professional development workshops on May 22nd designed to build capacity and promote engagement scholarship through teaching, research and service. Sessions will discuss building engagement into scholarship, the culture of engagement at Ohio State, and the unique role that "boundary spanners" play in engagement scholarship. Course Spotlight

OPTOM 5600 Eyes on Community Health This is a new service-learning course that incorporates the study of social determinants of health with community outreach activities. Students will provide glaucoma screenings and health coaching for community members dealing with chronic health issues. This two-credit hour Summer course is open to undergraduates, graduate students, and optometry students. Develop journal manuscripts from your community engagement The Pen to Paper Academic Writing Retreat, July 24th-25th in Henryville, IN, is designed to provide time, space, and resources to help faculty, staff, and graduate students working on journal manuscripts rooted in community engagement. During the two day retreat participants have time to share ideas with colleagues, receive feedback from journal editors and peers, and write. This event is facilitated by  Indiana Campus Compact and the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (IARSLCE). International Service-Learning Mini-Conference: May 8th at Wright State University Join Ohio Campus Compact and member institutions at Wright State to discuss the rewards, risks, and responsibilities inherent to short-term service-learning experiences abroad. This day-long event will include a panel discussion on best practices and an exchange of tools and resources commonly used in creating international service-learning experiences.
