Ohio State Service-Learning News

The S-LI Has Moved The Service-Learning Initiative has temporarily re-located to a new office in 150Q Page Hall, in the Undergraduate Research Office. Please update your contacts accordingly. This will be our last temporary space until we move into our new offices at 53 W. 11th Ave later this fall.

Election Season Is Here! The Service-Learning Initiative would like to ask all service-learning faculty and instructors to help Ohio State get out the vote this year. We've put together a website with suggestions for making the election process a part of your curriculum. You can view it here: http://service-learning.osu.edu/voting-and-service-learning.html If you're doing something to encourage student voting this year, please let us know- we'd love to hear about it!

Service-Learning Coffee Hour Resources We'd like to extend our appreciation to all of you who made the time to visit our Service-Learning Welcome Back Coffee Hour on September 13th. We had a great turn-out, and it was a welcome opportunity to re-connect with friends and see some new people get involved with service-learning here at Ohio State. If you were unable to attend, you can access the materials we distributed here: http://service-learning.osu.edu/assets/files/2012accomplishments.pdf

Service-Learning Course Spotlight

In order to help service-learning scholars make connections and learn about new projects, we will seek to highlight a new service-learning course in every newsletter. Courses will be shared both here and in the "Spotlight" section on the front page of our website. If you are interested in having your course highlighted, please let Harmony know at hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu<mailto:hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu>.

ARTS & SCI 3191: SparkPE Students enrolled in this class will spend 2-3 hours weekly leading exercise classes for Licking County schoolchildren with ADHD or disabilities affecting memory and attention. Research shows that exercise mitigates the symptoms of ADHD and improves academic performance, sometimes dramatically, in all populations. Students enrolled in the course will be educated on the nature of ADHD by a nationally known ADHD academic coach (Jodi Sleeper-Triplett) and trained on implementing an exercise program called SparkPE. Although students enrolled in this class will not be working as traditional ADHD academic coach/tutors, they will benefit from 12 hours of training in ADHD coaching, which can be put toward the 30 hours required of those wishing to be certified as ADHD coaches. This course is taught at Ohio State's Newark campus. Email instructor Jen Anthony at anthony.212 at osu.edu<mailto:anthony.212 at osu.edu> for more details.

Resources and Events
Service-Learning Workshop at UCAT on November 28th This fall, we will be partnering with the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching (UCAT) to present "Designing Service-Learning Into Your Course". We'll cover the basics of service-learning: discuss what service-learning is, how it works, and the nuts and bolts of a service-learning course. We'll also discuss examples of current courses at Ohio State, and tell you how the Service-Learning Initiative can support your efforts. If you'd like to attend or know someone else who might, please pass on the event registration page: http://ucat.osu.edu/drupal-6.17/?q=node/57

To Learn and To Serve: Critical Service-Learning Initiatives and Community Engagements This conference takes place from October 18th-20th on and around Ohio State's Columbus Campus. It will bring together students, teachers, teacher educators, researchers, school and university administrators, and community members to explore intersections of service-learning initiatives and community engagements across K-16 settings. Conference attendees will have an opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions, panel sessions, and teaching and research conversations all in an effort to learn more about the potential of service-learning and community engagement initiatives in schools and local communities. For more information or to register, please visit http://ehe.osu.edu/events/2012/08/15/working-conference-overview-registration-info/.

Sincerely,

Ola Ahlqvist and Harmony Cox
