Service-Learning Coffee Hour: To promote service-learning scholarship at Ohio State it is vital for us to engage with colleagues on the national level. The Service-Learning Initiative coffee hour in March will encourage research and scholarship. Come learn from past attendees and presenters at the National Outreach Scholarship Conference (NOSC) and the International Association of Researchers for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (IARSLCE). The coffee hour will take place at 1116 Derby Hall from 9am to 10am on Friday, March 16th. RSVP to Harmony at hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu<mailto:hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu>. We hope to see you there!

Help Us Promote Our Service-Learning Student Update list! The Service-Learning Student Update (SLSU) list is a new companion to the SLSR (this newsletter), and provides information and opportunities specifically geared towards students. To help promote it, we've created a webpage and an archive for it here: http://service-learning.osu.edu/service-learning-student-updates1.html We would really love to see your students subscribe! Please forward the link and attached information to any students that you believe would be interested. Our next student mailing comes out this Friday, so please help us spread it around!

Service-Learning Course Spotlight
In order to help faculty and students make connections to upcoming service-learning courses, we will seek to spotlight a unique service-learning course in each newsletter. If you're interested in having your course featured like this, please email us at hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu<mailto:hcox at esue.ohio-state.edu>.

Engineering 692: Service-Learning in Engineering This engineering class works with two sites: an orphanage in Montana de Luz, and a vocational school in Choluteca. The course focuses on cultural awareness, problem solving, and international service learning. Students in the course identify and analyze the impact of sustainable technology on a developing country, devise practical and sustainable Engineering solutions that involve partnerships with the local entity or community, and participate in a Study Abroad experience to implement team-based projects and to document the lessons learned. Listen to one student's story at http://youtu.be/S6uQsf1gZ1Q. For more information, please contact John Merrill at merrill.25 at osu.edu<mailto:merrill.25 at osu.edu> or view the course webpage at https://eeic.osu.edu/course/engineer-692-service-learning-engineering .

Resources and Opportunities

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU): Addressing Social and Environmental Disparities through Community Geography and Geographic Information Systems This opportunity at Georgia State University is funded by the National Science Foundation. Working with faculty mentors, 10 selected undergraduates will engage in community-based research and fieldwork to quantitatively and qualitatively examine neighborhood change, property markets, air and soil quality, urban green spaces, and neighborhood visioning in partnership with neighborhood residents and community groups. The program runs June 18th - August 2nd and each REU student will receive a competitive funding package. Applications are due Friday, March 23rd @ 5 PM EST. See http://csaw.gsu.edu/nsf-reu/ for more information. This program is a great example of how community based research can get serious funding, and we encourage anyone interested to learn more about it.

2012 NOSC Call for Proposals The Call for Proposals is now open for the 13th Annual Meeting of the National Outreach Scholarship Conference<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=vnfh5neab&et=1109324945372&s=6814&e=001Vip_PL8kKsaM1iIJhEdk56aSoKneUmkbBuseKwjo0q3ghtQAa2HiHh9xXsliCr0_QotiIJHCwyLISN3S8PCJkW-Q_Fyvn9PZFzuB00b6dig=> (NOSC). NOSC's goal is to work collaboratively to build strong university-community partnerships anchored in the rigor of scholarship and designed to help build community capacity. They are seeking proposals for three tracks: The Voice of the Faculty and Staff, The Voice of the Student, and The Voice of the Community Partner. This year's event is hosted by The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on September 30 - October 3, 2012.
