Ohio State Service-Learning News
Ohio State University Receives "With Distinction" Placement on President's Honor Roll Last year, nearly 25,000 Ohio State students gave 756,130 hours in service to the community - earning the university a spot on the 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. The Corporation for National and Community Service this year named more than 600 institutions of higher education to the list for their commitment and achievement in community service, with 110 achieving the Honor Roll with Distinction, including six in Ohio. This is the fourth year that Ohio State has achieved the Honor Roll with Distinction, with students working on issues from health care access and student philanthropy to supporting at-risk youth. Resources and Opportunities

OSU CARES Grants Available Requests for Proposals (RFPs) are now available for funding through the OSU CARES/OSU Extension Seed Grants programs. These grants of up to $10,000 each are available to all Ohio State faculty and staff interested in expanding Ohio State's outreach and engagement work throughout Ohio. The grant requires a partnership between at least two colleges (including OSU Extension as one of the partners). Submission deadline for grant proposals is May 15th. To learn more about the grants program, visit http://osucares.osu.edu/<http://www.osucares.osu.edu/> or contact Karen Bruns or Terri Fisher at osucares at osu.edu<mailto:osucares at osu.edu> or 614.688.4486.

Call for Proposals: IPSC Research Grants Since its inception, the International Poverty Solutions Collaborative has supported investigator-initiated, meritorious research. To further support research, they have released a call for proposals looking to provide support for projects that are consistent with the agenda of the IPSC, and invite interested investigators to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) for projects that target areas of focus in urban, rural, and international communities of poverty. For more information, please view the call for proposals here: http://poverty.osu.edu/news-and-media/events/seedgrants/ . All LOIs are due April 19th, 2012.

National Outreach Scholarship Conference call for proposals Proposals from faculty, staff and students are currently being sought for the 2012 National Outreach Scholarship Conference<http://nosc2012.ua.edu/>, which will be Sept. 30-Oct. 3 at the University of Alabama. NOSC 2012 will explore engaged scholarship and practice that advance the theme "Partner. Inspire. Change." The conference seeks research and evidenced-based practice that advance engaged scholarship and practice through research findings, innovative design and partnership, community and institutional impact, curriculum, policy, service-learning and civic engagement. The proposal deadline is April 11. Visit http://nosc2012.ua.edu/proposals.html to submit a proposal or for more information.

Events

Good Works in Central America: Interrogating North American Voluntary Service This conference will critically examine travel-for-service and the micro-politics of encounters between privileged visitors (professionals, politically motivated groups, service-learning programs) and impoverished third-world communities they visit, as well as the larger implications of poverty relief efforts organized outside of and sometimes in opposition to existing national and international institutions. It will provide an opportunity for students and faculty interested in international service to reflect upon their motives, practices, and experiences and to consider not only their immediate accomplishments but the longer-term implications of the kind of citizen-diplomacy they aspire to enact. The conference will take place on May 3rd and 4th at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies (1501 Neil Ave. Columbus OH 43201). For more information or to register, please visit: http://mershoncenter.osu.edu/events/11-12events/May12/goodworksconfmay3.htm.

Sincerely,

Ola Ahlqvist and Harmony Cox
