<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#333333">Dr. Wikoff authored an article with Dr. Erin Lane (teaching CSED:4137:0EXW Introduction to Educating Gifted Students this summer) and Dr. Matthew Beck entitled, “We Need to Feel Safe: Experiences of Gifted LGBTQ+
Students and Implications for School Counselors,” 2021 (and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a reading for the course ;-o).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#333333">I thought this quote from a participant was SO meaningful! We need to know more about and do more for this diverse population, especially when LGBTQ+ kids are facing legislative challenges throughout the country
to limit what they can do in their lives.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Open Sans",sans-serif;color:#333333"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.5in"><b><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Open Sans",sans-serif;color:#333333">Feelings of ostracism can also be a problem. Being smart is cool in the real world, but not necessarily in middle school/high school.
And being gay is almost universally uncool in middle school/high school. Or, at least, it wasn't a badge of honor where I grew up. Both of these things can make the students feel lonely, and it's important to help them find communities they can connect with.<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
