ODE is Seeking Input on Regional Gifted Schools by June 19<br>
<br>
The Ohio General Assembly has directed the Ohio Department of Education to<br>
examine the feasibility of the establishment of a start-up community school<br>
in each of the sixteen regions of the Educational Regional Service System<br>
to serve primarily identified gifted students. An important part of this<br>
study is a survey of parents and others interested in educational services<br>
for children identified as gifted. Please provide input by clicking on the<br>

New OAGC Documents Available<br>
<br>
Two new OAGC documents are available. The first is the [3]OAGC Position on<br>
High Quality Professional Development for Teachers Providing Gifted<br>
Services. The second is a newly revised [4]2016 State of Gifted Education<br>

Gifted Operating Standards Update<br>
<br>
There is little new to report regarding the gifted operating standards.<br>
However, several organizations are scheduled to present at the June state<br>
board meeting (June 13 & 14). It is expected that OAGC will be asked to<br>
present to the full board in July. ODE staff has been directed to work on a<br>
new draft of the standards. For updates on this process, please visit the<br>

ESSA Update<br>
<br>
USDOE has posted a draft of the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) rules on<br>
the [8]federal register. The department will take comments until August 1.<br>
NAGC has provided information to [9]state school officers about the gifted<br>
provisions in this act. Also Northwestern Center of Talent Development has<br>
a very [10]thorough article on the provisions. OAGC will be developing<br>
talking points on ESSA specific to Ohio issues over the coming weeks which<br>
will be shared to gifted advocates before the August 1 deadline for<br>
comments.<br>
