The University of Iowa’s first “summer session” begins on May 15.  We knew that the end of your academic year MIGHT not be a great fit for that timeline, but we have one workshop that launches the summer session!  Please share with interested colleagues, especially your school counselors.

Dr. Haley Wikoff is teaching EDTL:4075:0WKA (Topics): Understanding and Addressing the Unique Needs of Gifted LGBTQ+ Students (May 15 – June 2).

Dr. Wikoff authored an article with Dr. Erin Lane (teaching CSED:4137:0EXW Introduction to Educating Gifted Students this summer) and Dr. Matthew Beck entitled, “We Need to Feel Safe: Experiences of Gifted LGBTQ+ Students and Implications for School Counselors,” 2021 (and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a reading for the course ;-o).

I thought this quote from a participant was SO meaningful!  We need to know more about and do more for this diverse population, especially when LGBTQ+ kids are facing legislative challenges throughout the country to limit what they can do in their lives.

Feelings of ostracism can also be a problem. Being smart is cool in the real world, but not necessarily in middle school/high school. And being gay is almost universally uncool in middle school/high school. Or, at least, it wasn't a badge of honor where I grew up. Both of these things can make the students feel lonely, and it's important to help them find communities they can connect with.

This will be one of our most important workshops this summer—if you have time to squeeze in one more thing, please get enrolled (we will have to cancel without sufficient enrollment ☹ ).

For the endorsement and/or for your personal professional development, you can register as an undergraduate to save tuition dollars ($363 per semester hour at the undergraduate level).  If you can benefit from graduate credit, tuition this summer is still $605 / hour.

If you and a colleague from your school / district want to use one of these classes for a professional learning community, the Belin-Blank Center will provide each member of that cohort with a 50% tuition scholarship (determined by graduate tuition); all participants, graduate or undergraduate, would pay $302.50 for this asynchronous one-semester-hour class.
