Dear Colleagues,

The Belin-Blank Center is offering a unique opportunity as well as a workshop with new content!

EDTL:4073:0WKA Prog/Curr for High Ability Students begins September 12 (next Monday); this course may be repeated up to four times. Here’s the course description:

Participants will learn ways to tell the stories of gifted/talented individuals from traditionally marginalized and/or underrepresented populations in gifted education programs, and they will craft lessons that can be used directly with students in gifted programs, utilizing the Autonomous Learner Model to organize the material. Materials will be edited for inclusion in a new Open Educational Resource, Diverse Faces in Gifted Education, facilitating the development of gifted programs that are safe, welcoming, and empowering spaces for students who are diverse, culturally, linguistically, ethnically, racially, vary by sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and/or who are twice exceptional.

Dr. Alena Treat will develop participants’ understandings of the Autonomous Learner Model (ALM) and will work with them on the creation of units (usually 3 – 5 lessons) that focus on traditionally underrepresented students.

The listserv has had discussions about some kind of site to showcase materials that can be used with high-ability learners. The Open Educational Resource, Diverse Faces in Gifted Education, will be such a resource. We’ve had several units developed that were aligned with the Enrichment Triad; this semester, we’ll focus on the ALM. Those who enroll will learn about BOTH a curriculum model that provides advantages for gifted/talented learners AND develop a unit that can build on personal resources or on the extensive database available, filled with examples of diverse individuals who could be featured in these units.

Dr. Treat will also provide guidance for creating empowerment curriculum as an option—and these will be materials that you’ll use to help diverse learners see themselves in the curriculum. They will also be opportunities for your students to see others who might not even be represented in your school as gifted, another equally important goal.

Your preferred content area; your preferred age group; your preferred format for the lesson plans themselves.

Your chance to have a unit that you want to share available in an Open Educational Resource (edited by Laurie Croft and Alena Treat).

If at least two individuals from your school/district enroll, so the workshop can serve as a PLC in your location, the Center will provide a 50% tuition scholarship (based on the cost of graduate tuition at $605—those enrolled as undergraduates receive smaller scholarships). If the graduate credits don’t benefit you personally, consider registering as a non-degree seeking *undergraduate,* allowed in spite of the degree(s) you might hold 😉 Tuition for undergraduates is $363.

Workshops assess tuition only—no additional fees. This workshop applies to the Programming strand for the State of Iowa Gifted and Talented Endorsement, if you know someone who is pursuing the endorsement.

If you want to read the benefits of having a curriculum model in place, or at least having that model in mind as you develop curriculum, you can review this classic article by Dr. Joyce VanTassel Baska (1986): https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://gift.fed.cuhk.edu.hk/download/Vantassel-Baska*20Article*202.pdf__;JSU!!KGKeukY!wJDojj-Twtg8il_O1MbRE7TJIo64g73xWMFwe7SUW6TouiCpFv66-HpTBx1z1XU2p6PwzQTxDP89b_afHvRESjMSiPVRtw$ .
