Regeneron Science Talent Search Winners
Regeneron and Society for Science announced the top ten winners of the 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), including:
   - Christine Ye (pictured, middle) won the top award of $250,000 for her project in which she set a novel precedent for modeling rapidly-rotating neutron stars, showing that a quickly spinning neutron star could be extra massive, but still smaller than a black hole.
   - Victor Cai (right) received second place and $175,000 for creating a short-range, narrow-bandwidth radar that could help pave the way for more self-driving vehicles on the road with less concern over bandwidth.
   - Amber Luo (left) received third place and $150,000 for developing a software that enables researchers to gain a more complete view of the mechanisms underlying a wide range of diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and cancers.
Each year, nearly 1,900 students enter the Regeneron STS, submitting original research in critically important scientific fields of study.

| How to Talk About Your Gifted Kid - How do parents of gifted students talk to others about their precocious children?  This is a question that comes up often among Young Scholars parents and the gifted community at large, and the following question was posed. See a few responses! (Davidson Gifted Blog)

Keep fighting for selective high schools - "The question isn’t whether these gaps should persist. In a better and fairer world, they wouldn’t. Virtually everyone wants them to narrow. The question, instead, is how best to accomplish that." (Fordham Institute)

Keeping the gifted alive - "Instead of pushing high-potential students outside of schools to find resources that allow them to reach their potential, we should find more ways to bring those resources into schools." (District Administration)

Maxine Park, Davidson Fellow
Maxine Park of Hanover, N.H. received $25,000 for her Davidson Fellows portfolio, "Why Journeys and Not Destinations: A Framework for Approaching Life's Goals."

What kind of impact can your Davidson Fellows project have on society?
My project, “Why Journeys and Not Destinations? A Framework for Approaching Life’s Goals,” combined my love for psychology and my experiences as a musician to develop a framework for tackling long-term goals. The idea was inspired by a paper in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology a few years ago by Stanford researchers Szu-chi Huang and Jennifer Aaker, who argued that viewing our goals as journeys allows us to develop longer lasting behaviors than if we viewed the same goals as destinations. In my framework, I expand on this idea and argue that focusing on three Cs — commitment, connection, communication — we can make our goals more attainable and meaningful.

The beauty of a framework, I believe, is that it is specific enough to provide direction but flexible enough to be widely applicable. As a musician, a long-term goal may be something like learning a difficult piece beyond my current technical and musical ability. But what about issues a tad more high-stakes, like climate change, healthcare access, social inequality?

I hope my framework will help provide some direction to problems that at first seem unapproachable. Just as a musician must commit themselves to the goal of mastering a new piece, how do we get people to commit emotionally and psychologically to the fight against climate change? Just as a musician improves by connecting themselves with experienced mentors, how do we help individuals become proximate to larger issues by connecting them with the authorities in relevant fields? And finally, communication. For a musician, performance is an opportunity to communicate your work to an audience. In society, communication is key for individuals to collaborate and propel their community, field, and industry forward.

Most importantly, I hope that my project will help young people develop the motivation, relationships, and communication skills necessary to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. Systemic change begins with the individual, and each of our individual journeys are instrumental in this change.

What are some of your short-term and long-term plans?
As a senior, the fast-approaching end of my high school career is bittersweet. Musically, I am looking forward to spending this last term learning some of my favorite pieces (including Bach’s French Overture and Schumann’s Carnaval). I will also be performing my Chopin E Minor Piano concerto with Maestro Rohan Smith and the Exeter Orchestra in April and with Maestro John Page and the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra in June. Outside of music, I am also directing my school Phillips Exeter Academy’s annual TEDx event for the second year, so the next few weeks will be pretty exciting!

In college, I hope to major in psychology and with either a minor or a double major in music performance. My parents actually met at the piano in college, and though they are not professional musicians, our family cannot imagine life without the energizing beauty of classical music. While I am not sure at this point where life will take me, I believe piano and psychology will remain lifelong passions.

What advice do you have for students interested in music?
It can often be easy to get caught up in the world of competitions — I think these kinds of higher-stakes performances can be great for motivation, but they aren’t everything. Immerse yourself in the music you truly love and don’t be afraid to take risks! As with anything, there are always going to be things that seem harder than you are capable of achieving right now, but it is never too early to start working on them. Also, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for so many incredible teachers. As much as you can, try to seek out people who can inspire and coach you — people who are lovingly critical and aren’t afraid of challenging you (sometimes with brutal honesty) to help you strive for your best. Music, too, is not a destination but a journey — committing time to exploring music, connecting with friends you can discuss your favorite recordings with — it is certainly a journey that can lead to beautiful friendships and
personal fulfillment. |

| “You have to be willing to take risks and try things you've never tried before. In science you're constantly pushing yourself, asking 'can I figure out why that happens?' It's similar in art, you ask 'can I push the boundaries?' and try new techniques . . . Whenever you start something, you may not be that great and it's totally okay. It's okay to pick up new interests and hobbies and keep pursuing them. Don't ever let that curiosity fail.”
