| Hometown Heroes |

 |

|
| We often recognize and honor figures of national prominence who have made a difference for our country. Yet, there are many individuals in our local communities who have had a sizable influence on our towns, cities, and states. These people are from all different eras and backgrounds: It's the educator who your school is named after who opened it back in the 1800s. It's the World War II veteran who fought for our country and has resided in your town for the past 50 years. It's the past mayor of your city or town who was the driving force behind modernizing where you live. It's the nurse or doctor who has been on the front lines this past year tirelessly doing life-saving work in their field. Hometown Heroes are all around us -- even if sometimes we don't realize it -- and it's time to honor their legacies.
The NHC encourages student members to select a figure (local or state-wide) and examine how that person’s actions helped make a lasting and positive impact on history. We strongly encourage students to look for unique figures who may not be known to the general population.
Entries must be received by April 10, 2021 and submissions are judged by the NHC Advisory Board and winners will be announced at the end of April. Awards: First Place - $1,000, Second Place - $500 (one prize), Third Place - $250 (two prizes) |

| TCR History Camp |

| The 2021 TCR History Camp is an intensive online workshop in historical research and writing for secondary students. In each 2-week session, 2 experienced instructors will coach students, all working remotely, to compose a first draft of an historical research paper on a topic of their choice.
Instructors work one-on-one with students, coaching them through the research and writing process: formulating productive research questions; finding and making discerning use of primary and secondary sources; marshaling evidence to support one's position or narrative; puzzling together a narrative structure for one's essay; documenting evidence with University of Chicago-style source citations; and writing and rewriting.
Early Application Deadline December 31! |

| Boston University History Department |

| Alone among the disciplines, history embraces the sum of the human experience -- politics, economics, religion, art, ideas, culture, social structures, and science. Boston University's History faculty seek to enable students to have imaginative encounters with the past, which are essential to interpreting who we are and how we came to be.
BU History offers a broad range of course options covering African, American, European, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American history. While the Department has a national and international reputation in its scholarship, the faculty are also devoted to teaching and advising students.
During their time at BU, our undergraduates have countless opportunities to study history beyond the classroom, including participation in active organizations like the Undergraduate History Association and Phi Alpha Theta. And, of course, the Boston Area offers endless opportunities to explore American history, along with numerous archives and museums where students can research almost any topic. |

| University of Arkansas History Department |

| At the University of Arkansas, the flagship land-grant institution of Arkansas, the History Department ranks among the ten top programs. Like the other top programs at the UofA, it has drawn students from the surrounding states as well, and beyond, including some international students worldwide. With a 25 full-time faculty and an additional 14 Ph.D.-holding instructors and lecturers specialized in most time periods and geographic areas, it is known for its high quality of teaching, and for its prolific scholarship, with over 60 books published in the past ten years, a record that includes two Pulitzer prize finalists.
Under the generous guidance of these scholars, students can explore traditional and new areas of study, from Colonial America to LGBTQ+, from Ancient Greece to Modern China, from International Relations to Environmental History. The History Department's professional training, in general, has proven very strong, preparing students for careers in education, government, law, media and communication, social services, business, and nonprofits. Besides producing a few national leaders in political, military, and business areas, we also count as proud products of our department bankers, lawyers, medical doctors, librarians, teachers, journalists, directors of communications for political caucuses, Amazon and Google analysts, museum directors, poets, park rangers, software entrepreneurs, helicopter pilots.
Finally, with 30 M.A. students and 45 Ph. D. students, the Department's graduate program has for a long time been among the nation's most successful in placing its candidates in academic jobs. You can check about our department on our website and Facebook page! |
