Davidson Academy - An Engaging, Challenging Educational Environment for Gifted Students
The Davidson Academy is designed to accommodate the unique educational and emotional needs of highly gifted students. At the Academy, students are grouped by ability rather than age, offering a middle and high school level curriculum that is matched to their abilities, strengths and interests. Our unique approach to learning has attracted families from across the country and globe.

The  Academy offers two educational options specifically designed to meet the needs of the highly gifted – an online campus for those living anywhere in the U.S. and Canada and a school on the University of Nevada, Reno campus for local residents. Both options are centered on a dynamic academic environment where students thrive among their intellectual peers. |

Why the Davidson Academy
  |

  |

|
|
| |

| The importance of small class sizes.
Small class sizes at the Davidson Academy allow students to engage with teachers and other students, building friendships and fostering a strong sense of community.

Your education should be personal.
Education at the Davidson Academy is specifically tailored to individual students. All students receive a personalized learning plan, which allows students to explore various interests and fields of study, while still meeting their graduation requirements. |

  |

  |

|
| We know gifted.
The Davidson Academy's teaching methods and curriculum focuses on critical thinking skills and has sincere regard for the unique needs of individual learners. Teachers and staff are well versed in the needs of profoundly gifted students and every aspect of the Academy experience is molded to fit those needs. Each student's abilities, strengths, and interests are encouraged and supported.

Education should be fluid and flexible.
At the Davidson Academy, students aren’t restricted to grade level curriculum. Instead, students learn based on ability, not age. This allows students to engage with and learn beside like-minded peers in dynamic classrooms at the Reno campus or through live, synchronous online campus sessions.

Your education should be limitless.
The Davidson Academy provides students the opportunity to access university courses or advanced studies under a dual enrollment agreement. Additionally, single course enrollments are available through the online campus.

Epsilon Camp & MathPath
Application season has begun for Epsilon Camp, a two-week summer residential camp serving exceptional young mathematicians and their families through an intensive student program and parent workshop. The mission of Epsilon is to connect profoundly gifted children (ages 7-11) to professional mathematics and build a supportive community with peers and families. Epsilon Camp 2021 will be held from July 18-August 1.

Admission season has also begun for MathPath, a four-week summer residential program whose mission is to inspire and advance the most mathematically gifted middle school age students (11-14). MathPath and Epsilon Camp (for younger children) are enrichment programs where students advance in a non-competitive atmosphere. |

Emily Tianshi, Davidson Fellow
Helping Alleviate Freshwater Scarcity by Harvesting Atmospheric Moisture

Emily Tianshi of San Diego received $25,000 for her Davidson Fellows project, "Biomimicking Torrey Pine Needles: Atmospheric Moisture Harvesting Device Through Alternating Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Micro-Patterns."   |

|
| What kind of impact can your Davidson Fellows project have on society?
By 2025, two-thirds of people could be living in water-stressed regions. Harvesting moisture from the atmosphere is an innovative and viable way to provide people with freshwater. Torrey Pine tree needles are well known for their fog capturing abilities. I analyzed the needles’ surface structures and properties, identifying the ones that might contribute to effective moisture harvesting. I then biomimicked these properties into a patent-pending moisture harvesting material and a device prototype, which is in the process of being tested. I discovered a unique alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic micro-pattern on the needle that when applied to a material could improve that harvesting rate by almost three times.

Compared to the latest technologies, my work is meaningful because it requires no energy. My invention is useful for places like Argentina, Namibia, and Chile, where investigators estimated that capturing 4% of the moisture in the air could be sufficient to meet the demands of the nation’s driest areas. It has the potential to benefit coastal Peru, where there are six to eight months of daily fog but a severe drought. Overall, there are 577,000 kilometers of atmospheric moisture, a reserve waiting to be tapped.

What are some of your short-term and long-term plans?
I am in my senior year of high school and navigating my way between college applications, a senior thesis, and continuing my research project. Over quarantine, I was able to spend a lot of time studying Torrey Pine needles’ moisture uptake behavior. I am working with my mentor to submit a plant science paper to a peer-reviewed journal.

I am also actively running my non-profit organization, We Impact, and environmental initiative, Clearwater Innovation. I look forward to speaking at a Students and Young Professionals Committee meeting hosted by the Water Environmental Federation in December.

I am interested in the connections between the sciences and humanities and would like to double major in a Science subject and Public Policy in college. In the future, I hope to be involved in scientific research, policy making, and/or entrepreneurship. It would be amazing to be on the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or the International Bioethics Committee.

Please describe your academic setting and some positive experiences with mentors.
I I attend a Classical school with a liberal arts curriculum. The rigorous humanities courses I’ve taken have helped me view research through the lenses of rhetoric and philosophy; it’s made me realize that every scientific development also presents social and sometimes ethical considerations. In school, we’ve read C.S. Lewis’s “Abolition of Man” and Huxley’s “Brave New World” alongside learning neuroscience and computer science.

I met one of my amazing mentors, Dr. Pao Chau, a retired professor from UC San Diego, after I presented my research at a Torrey Pines Docent Society conference, where he’s a devoted park ranger. I often meet with him on Sunday mornings at a Starbucks near Torrey Pines State Park. My favorite memory was when he once brought a micropipette and some plant samples, and we turned our table in the middle of the bustling coffee shop into a mini lab, attracting the confused stares of many onlookers. |

| “It is time to offer our high ability, gifted children a world where it is acceptable to express their differences. Where such abilities are neither glamorized nor mocked. Where being different is tolerated, appreciated, and accepted. Where gifted education is a right. Where it is safe to be smart.”
