| To our Davidson Institute families,

We know our community is in pain. Whether it is from the recent protests, medical or economic hardship as a result of the pandemic, or just from the general challenges of being a family raising a differently wired child. We see you. We hear you.

We know these are turbulent times. Profoundly gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students process the world around them in unique ways. Many of the characteristics of our students include increased awareness, emotional depth and intensity, existential questions and dilemmas, heightened sensitivity, and idealism accompanying a strong sense of justice. Your child may be asking hard questions right now. As a family, you may already be having these difficult conversations around race and other topics or may not know where to begin.

We know too that racial underrepresentation is an ongoing issue in the gifted community at large. As the National Association for Gifted Children states on their website, “The gaps in support of and services for our most advanced students are even more pronounced for children from minority, ELL, and low-income backgrounds.” Recent protests for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others highlight the reality that gifted students of color and their families, not only face issues within the classroom, but must also grapple with complex and troubling issues of racism in our country.

What we don’t always know is how to best foster resilience in our community in the face of the issues that are looming so large today. We want to listen to our families and colleagues. We want to be a part of the conversation that helps move the gifted community forward. We want to make a positive difference.

The Davidson Institute remains committed to our shared beliefs that all young people should be lovingly nurtured in a safe, supportive environment where each person is accepted and appreciated as a unique individual. All young people should have access to an education where they can learn and achieve at a level appropriate to their abilities. All young people should have an opportunity to develop their talents in positive ways to create value for themselves and others.

We support our families and gifted community organizers who are navigating these difficult topics. We hope the following resources can support your work as a parent, student, educator, or organizer when addressing the issues of racial diversity in the gifted community:

   - “Navigating Society Can Be an Ongoing Challenge for the Culturally Diverse” by Tiombe Bisa Kendrick-Dunn

With renewed commitment to our community,
-The Davidson Institute for Talent Development |
