The Toolkit highlightsservice-learning projects, suggested websites, and resources for activities and events from notablesources.

The History and Legacy's Branch' goal in developing this Toolkit is to provide historically accuratematerials and interactive experiences that will help teachers and students better understand andappreciate the service of our Vietnam veterans and the history of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.While we do not endorse any particular resource, we encourage everyone to take advantage of thesuggested materials and ideas for use in elementary to college classrooms and afterschool programs sothat schools, school districts, and educational organizations can develop programs to thank and honor Vietnam veterans locally and nationally. The History Department at the University of Alabama offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, with courses ranging from introductory surveys to graduate research seminars in a wide range of subjects and chronological periods. Particular departmental specialties include the history of the American South, the history of race, Atlantic World history, Latin American history, religious history, and military history. It is also currently building a strength in Public History to maximize the opportunity for undergraduates and graduates alike to take their knowledge beyond the classroom, engage the public, and develop skills useful for an array of professional opportunities.

The department hosts a journal in southern history run entirely by graduate students. It also holds an annual national graduate student conference, and opportunities exist for undergraduates to work on their own independent research as well as build connections with interdisciplinary centers such as the Frances S. Summersell Center for the Study of the South. The department also sponsors a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society for History, and a Peer Mentoring Program in which upper-level students tutor introductory students, developing experience teaching while also guiding their peers through the challenges of a survey course.

The department has twenty-eight full-time faculty, all of whom maintain active scholarly agendas, publishing books and articles, winning fellowships and grants, bringing their research into the undergraduate classroom, and training graduate students to succeed in the academic job market or whatever their field of endeavor.
