Dear Colleagues,

Some of you have finished your academic year-others are finishing up this week or next.

Now that you have a few minutes to take a deep breath and think about your own interests, I wanted to share this summer's Belin-Blank Center professional learning experiences with you!

I've attached two different flyers (online, these have hotlinks, but I hope you won't hesitate to share electronically and in print). While I've elaborated on the classes below, the information is captured in the flyers (you *can* stop reading now ;-)

One is about our fully-online classes (you can find the complete schedule at https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/courses/schedule.aspx); we're actually almost finished with our first summer class, a book study about creativity using Teaching Outside the Lines, but

* Lori Danker, ITAG Board member and secondary Gifted and Talented Specialist at College Community School District, will be offering Programming and Curriculum for High-Ability Students: Facilitating Student Research Projects beginning June 11 (through June 29).

* Online coursework will continue with Dr. Jenelle Miller, Regional Representative for the California Association for the Gifted, offering Topics: Competitions for Elementary and Secondary Gifted/Talented Students (June 18 - July 9), helping educators find the kinds of extracurricular opportunities that allow many identified gifted students, as well as advanced learners in our schools who might benefit, to experience authentic learning experiences. Iowa's Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is advocating a strong Universal Tier, ensuring that all students are appropriately challenged, as well as more complex opportunities at the Supplemental Tier for more advanced learners.

* Anna Payne and I will be offering Differentiating Projects with Technology online for the first time (June 25 - July 16); we want our students to be technologically literate, but beyond that, the application of technology to student learning can add depth and complexity to students' curriculum, as well as critical and creative thinking. We ALSO want our students to be discerning consumers of the mass of data available!

Other fully online classes continue in July:

* Dr. Kristine Milburn, a longtime AP teacher as well as reader, and the K-12 ELP Coordinator and Teacher Leader in the West Des Moines Community School District, is facilitating Differentiation at the Secondary Level (July 9 - 27); the course itself is differentiated, providing options for those who have completed the Iowa Advanced Placement Teacher Training Institute<https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/aptti/> (June 26 - 29), as well as options for those who approach secondary differentiation in other ways.

* Dr. Toni Szymanski, an assistant professor of gifted education at Western Kentucky University, will teach Ethnic and Cultural Issues (July 16 - August 3), sharing her research expertise, as well as elaborating on a variety of programs she has developed to support the special needs of diverse gifted learners.

* Dr. Kimberly Chandler, instructor of gifted endorsement courses at The University of Virginia, and the immediate past Curriculum Director for the Center for Gifted Education at The College of William and Mary, will facilitate the final online class of the summer, Current Readings and Research (July 23 - August 12).

The SECOND flyer is all about the Belin-Blank Chautauqua (belinblank.org/Chautauqua<http://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/Educators/chautauqua/>)! At the beginning of the 20th Century, Chautauqua flourished in the United States as an adult education movement that allowed adults to enjoy each others' company while learning. We're doing the same ;-) You may enroll in one class, or in all six offered over two weeks. The classes include

Week I, July 9 - 14 (note Psychology strand, Programming strand, and Administrative strand classes)

  * Cognitive/Affective Needs of the Gifted<https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/courses/schedule.aspx#RCE:4126:0WKA> (M - T, Dr. Megan Foley Nicpon, recognized internationally for her expertise in twice-excepionality)
  * Science for High Ability Students<https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/courses/schedule.aspx#EDTL:4021:0WKA> (W - Th, Hallie Edgerly, completing her PhD in Fall 2018, Instructional Coach at Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Middle School, and actively engaged in the Belin-Blank Center's STEM grant to strengthen middle-school Excellence and Leadership program)
  * Topics in Education: Coordinating Gifted and Talented Programs<https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/courses/schedule.aspx#EPLS:5240:0WKA> (F - Sa, Nancy Grimes, past coordinator of gifted education in Waterloo, IA, for 20 years; past Belin-Blank Fellow)
Week II, Jul 16 - 21 (note Psychology strand, Programming strand, and Administrative strand classes)

  * Neuroscientific Implications for Gifted<https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/courses/schedule.aspx#PSQF:4128:0WKA> (M - T, Dr. Jose Assouline, adjunct faculty in Biomedical Engineering, member, Iowa Neuroscience Institute, and a core faculty member in The Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute)
  * Social Studies for High Ability Learners<https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/courses/schedule.aspx#EDTL:4065:0WKA> (W - Th, Dr. Jerry Croft, professor emeritus of Geography, and Dr. Laurie Croft, BA and MA, History, social studies teacher for gifted students, grades 4 - 8).
  * Evaluation of Gifted Programs<https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/courses/schedule.aspx#EPLS:4111:0WKA> (F - Sa, Mary Schmidt, past President of the Iowa Talented and Gifted Association, retired Heartland AEA Gifted Education Consultant)
The Belin-Blank Chautauqua is a hybrid program, providing face-to-face time with others committed to gifted education; most classes do include some work online through our ICON platform, following the two days on campus. The Center provides lunch on Friday of each week for everyone participating in Chautauqua, giving participants a chance to talk with experts from the Center, including Drs. Susan Assouline, Nick Colangelo, Megan Foley-Nicpon, Alyssa Doobay, Joy Goins. For those who enroll as graduate Distance and Online Learning students in all three classes in one week, the Center provides a full tuition scholarship for one of the classes; for those who enroll in all six in two weeks, the Center provides a full tuition scholarship for TWO of the six classes. If you let us know early next week, we do have limited housing at a residence hall by Blank Honors Center (see https://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/educators/chautauqua/ for details about housing).

We look forward to providing the professional learning experiences, aligned with national standards in gifted education, that can help educators earn the State of Iowa Talented and Gifted Endorsement, and can expand every educator's toolkit!

Enjoy the summer!

Laurie
