Professional Development

Summer HQPD Training

The deadline for early registration for the OAGC Summer HQPD Training
Academy is June 7. The academy will be held on June 21 and 22 and is
designed specifically for classroom teachers. Space is limited so please do
not hesitate to register. The registration form can be found at www.oagc.com/hqpd.asp<http://www.oagc.com/hqpd.asp> .

Fall Conference

The Fall Conference committee is putting finishing touches on small
sessions. Look for a draft of the sessions and keynote information in
mid-June. We are expecting another big crowd this year, so please make sure
you register early and book your hotel room. All fall conference
information can be found at www.oagc.com/fallconference.asp<http://www.oagc.com/fallconference.asp>.

Advocacy

While the General Assembly will be going on summer break, there are still
many bills and issues to watch. To keep up on all the latest, please follow
OAGC on Twitter or Facebook (see directions below) or visit
www.oagc.com/advocacyalerts.asp<http://www.oagc.com/advocacyalerts.asp>. One of the main bills we to watch is
HB591 (Duffey) which would radically alter district report cards. While
amendments were taken, it has not passed out of committee. One of those
amendments would better define gifted information that would be on the
report card. OAGC will review the amended bill. SB216, the education
deregulation bill also was amended, but did not yet clear committee. The
N-size issue was addressed in one of the amendments. With the House
Speaker election still unresolved, it is unclear when or if the House
Education committe will meet again. The OAGC advocacy alerts page will be
updated as we receive more information.

The Chapter 119 hearing for the gifted rule changes will be held during the
June State Board of Education meeting. If all goes as planned, the rule
would go into effect shortly after the new school year starts.
