The Three Lives of James Madison - Genius, Partisan, President

The Three Lives of James Madison
            By Noah Feldman

            Random House | Hardcover | 978-0-8129-9275-5 | 800 pages | $35.00

A sweeping reexamination of the Founding Father who transformed the United States in each of his political "lives" -- as a revolutionary thinker, as a partisan political strategist, and as a president.

"[Noah] Feldman's deeply thoughtful study shows that the three identities of James Madison constituted one exceptional life, which effectively mirrored the evolving identity of the American republic in its most formative phase. In Feldman's capable hands, Madison becomes the original embodiment of our 'living Constitution.'" -- The New York Times Book Review

While we often recognize and honor figures of national prominence, there are many individuals in our local communities who may not get the spotlight they deserve, people who have had a sizable influence on our towns, cities, and states. These people are from all different eras and backgrounds: It's the educator who your school is named after who opened it back in the 1800s. It's the World War II veteran who fought for our country and has resided in your town for the past 50 years. It's the past mayor of your city or governor of your state who was the driving force behind modernizing where you live. Hometown Heroes are all around us---even if sometimes we don't realize it---and it's time to honor their legacies.

With the generous support of The HBE Foundation, the NHC encourages student members to select a figure (local or state-wide) and examine how that person's actions helped make a lasting, positive impact on history. Contest entries can be submitted in any three of the following formats:

            * An essay of not more than 2,000 words, supplemented with a thorough bibliography and endnotes.

            * A documentary or PowerPoint presentation that reflects your ability to communicate your figure's importance, and also helps you develop skills in using photographs, video, graphic presentations, etc.

            * A website that reflects your ability to use website design software and computer technology to communicate how your historical figure influenced history.

All entries must be received by April 1, 2018 and cash prizes for the five top submissions total $5,000!

For more information, including how to submit an entry, please contact Bob Nasson.

The Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania offers a dynamic variety of courses dealing with the political, social, diplomatic, intellectual, economic and cultural history of the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, from the early medieval period to the present. The History Major gives undergraduates both specific mastery of particular times, places and aspects of the human condition and the critical skills to think historically about both long-term and modern phenomena, emphasizing the dynamics of change and continuity over time. History students work closely with faculty members in small seminar courses and in a variety of independent research projects. The History Department often funds such projects, allowing students to conduct original research in archives and libraries all over the world.

Penn's History Department has a long tradition of distinction, both in its scholarship and in its undergraduate teaching. Beginning as one of the first programs in the United States to offer doctoral study in history, the department continues to pioneer new areas of scholarship. History faculty have assumed a leading role in introducing and promoting new varieties of historical research and writing.

The Department of History of St. John's University offers a nurturing, learning environment. At the same time, students enjoy life on a bustling, attractive campus. St. John's has the largest undergraduate student body of any Catholic university in the country. The University is located in Queens, a borough of New York City and home to one of the most diverse populations in the United States. The History Department helps students explore the city and gain access to its many resources, including museums, libraries, and theaters. Many internship opportunities are available to our students. St. John's also provides many service learning opportunities.

The Department's full-time faculty members are recognized experts in a wide range of fields, including U.S., African, Asian, European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern history. This fall, our department has welcomed Dr. Robert Bland, a specialist in African-American history. Our faculty are dedicated researchers and teachers committed to student learning. History majors and minors learn to communicate with clarity and rhetorical force, to conduct historical research, and to employ historical methods and ways of thinking. Many of our students go on to careers in law, the business world, government, and education.

Our department's B.A./M.A. program in History allows students to complete Bachelor's and Master's degrees in a total of five years. Our department also offers the M.A. in History, the M.A. in Public History, and the Ph.D. in World History. Joint programs available to undergraduates are the B.A. in History/law degree, the B.A. in History/MBA, and the B.A. in History/M.A. in Museum Studies. Students are encouraged to study abroad at the St. John's campuses in Paris and Rome.
