University of Vermont

The history department at the University of Vermont is known for its dynamic research and teaching. Its twenty-six full-time faculty members have expertise in a broad diversity of geographical and thematic areas ranging, chronologically, from the medieval periods to the present (ancient history is taught at the University of Vermont through the classics department). Vermont faculty have authored, co-authored, or edited more than a hundred books and written many articles, essays, reviews, and newspaper editorials. Many of these research endeavors have been recognized nationally and internationally with awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Fulbright Commission.
This passion for research carries over into all classroom experiences at the University of Vermont. As a result of diverse faculty interests, students are able to take courses on a wide variety of topics including (to mention but a few areas) global environmental history, the history of the Himalayas, the history of film, the history of slavery, and the history of sexuality. Students are also able to concentrate on virtually any area of the world as a result of the geographical breadth of faculty expertise, which covers all of North and South America, Europe (including Russia), Africa, East and South Asia, and the Middle East.

At the University of Vermont, history courses range in format from larger lecture classes to smaller, research-intensive seminars. Each class requires extensive reading and writing and the ability to discuss complex issues in a sophisticated and well-informed manner. All students who major in history at the University of Vermont, leave the program with impeccable research skills developed through specialized courses on historical methods and senior seminars that privilege the production of a significant essay based on primary research. Students who excel in the study of history at the University of Vermont are invited to write a senior thesis, which involves a year of research and the production of a major piece of written work.

In addition to acquiring in-depth historical knowledge, students at the University of Vermont leave the history program with a range of important skills including the ability to synthesize large bodies of material, conduct research and think historically, craft arguments and substantiate claims with evidence, and write sophisticated prose. History majors at the University of Vermont end up pursuing a variety of career opportunities. While some go on to graduate school and pursue academic positions in universities and colleges, others teach at the secondary level, study law, pursue museum or historic preservation work, enter the business world, or engage in non-profit work. In short, the history degree at the University of Vermont both provides a significant and rewarding intellectual challenge for students and prepares them broadly for a range of future professional opportunities.

Have you ever wondered about the remarkable buildings in your state? What is their history and why do they look the way they do? Whether you're a Hoosier or a Californian, a New Yorker or a Tennessean, the free, open-access online encyclopedia of American architecture, SAH Archipedia, might have some answers. SAH Archipedia is an interactive, media-rich online encyclopedia of the built world published by the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) in collaboration with the University of Virginia Press. It was launched in 2012 with foundation content from the award-winning Buildings of the United States print book series and now contains over 17,500 building histories and introductory essays dealing with the architecture of 30 states and the District of Columbia. By summer 2017, SAH Archipedia will contain building histories from all 50 states, as well as histories of 200 urban settings and landscapes.

SAH has recently been awarded a third major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to commission leading historians to create new scholarly, born-digital research on the built environment in the U.S. and to update and reinterpret existing SAH Archipedia content. The grant will help support improvements to SAH Archipedia in its two formats: SAH Archipedia Classic Buildings, a comprehensive, open access online educational resource that will contain 100 of the most representative buildings, landscapes, and cityscapes in all 50 states, as well as a larger online library subscription resource containing additional essays and building entries.

Designated a "We the People Project" by NEH for its role in encouraging and enhancing the teaching, study, and understanding of American history, culture, and democratic principles, SAH Archipedia is designed to facilitate collaboration and exchange of humanities information and scholarship with the American and international public. For more information please visit SAH Archipedia.

Throughout history leaders and famous individuals have often inspired us with their words. The NHC and The HBE Foundation present the 4th annual Lessons of Leadership Contest, which invites members of the NHC to select a quote from a historical figure and examine how that person's actions validated his/her words and helped make an impact on history. Contest entries can be submitted in any three of the following formats:

            * An essay of not more than 2,000 words, supplemented with a thorough bibliography and endnotes.

            * A documentary that reflects your ability to communicate your figure's importance, and also helps you develop skills in using photographs, video, graphic presentations, etc.

            * A website that reflects your ability to use website design software and computer technology to communicate how your historical figure influenced history.

All entries must be received by April 1, 2017 and cash prizes for the five top submissions total $5,000!

This richly illustrated letterpress-inspired book combines feminist history with a vision for a better future. Based on the beloved Dead Feminists letterpress poster series, the book looks at 27 inspiring women who've changed the world including Eleanor Roosevelt, Gwendolyn Brooks, Rachel Carson, and more. Dead Feminists takes feminist inspiration to a new level of artistry and shows how ordinary and extraordinary women have made a difference throughout history (and how you can too). Includes a foreword by Jill Lepore, author of The Secret History of Wonder Woman.
