“Consider the following experiment conducted by cognitive
scientist Rolf Zwaan at the University of Rotterdam. He and
his colleagues contrived an arrangement so that one group of
experimental subjects close-read a text. The comparison group
read simply for meanings, not close-reading the words as such.
The first group could remember the words very well, but they
could not remember the meanings as well as the group who had
read for meaning but did not close-read. Close reading had
produced inferior comprehension and memory for meaning.”
