The History Department at the University of Rhode Island cultivates an informed understanding and appreciation of past societies and cultures through its diverse course offerings. The faculty prides itself on teaching students to write persuasively, read critically, and think creatively about human experiences in the past throughout the world. The capstone course sequence for majors provides students with an outstanding research experience.

The Department offers Bachelor's and Master's degrees in History, as well as combined graduate degrees in History and Information and Library Studies, and History, Anthropology and Archaeology. Undergraduate students frequently double major in History and fields such as Elementary or Secondary Education, Political Science, Women's Studies, African-American Studies, Theater, and Journalism. The department also offers a minor in Underwater Archaeology. Our students pursue careers in business, education, public history, law, public service, and advanced historical research.

The Department of History at Ohio University is tied with Case Western Reserve University (private) and Miami University (public) as the second-ranked history program in the state of Ohio. Our mission is to further the effective understanding of the past for use in the contemporary world, to expose students to the histories and cultures of all the world's peoples, and to provide high quality training for a variety of careers.

The department offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees as well as teaching and research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Our doctoral program, which focuses on contemporary (post-1945) history, is one of two in Ohio recognized by the Board of Regents for the past twenty years as deserving state subsidy.

The Department of History has for many years been one of the premier departments at Ohio University, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It maintains the most rigorous of standards in both teaching and scholarship, it teaches an increasing number of students, it produces an unusual amount of quality scholarship for its size (23 full-time faculty), and it enjoys a national and international reputation that compares favorably with peer institutions. The focus on contemporary history continues to give a unique visibility within the historical profession.
