 Everyone:

This week is vital for Ohio education, as the search for a new State Superintendent is under way. Make your voice heard by giving feedback on the search. See the related news from Friday's OAGC Advocacy Alerts, below the break. A link directs you to the website to let the ODE know what you think about what qualities you want to see in the next superintendent.

The survey takes less than 5 minutes, so please let Columbus know where you stand on the values and qualities you want to see in the new superintendent.

Best wishes,
Art Snyder

What Kind of State Superintendent Would You Like? – Do you support the recent ODE philosophies that often focus on deregulation and flexibility for district superintendents over the needs of children?  Or would you prefer a different approach? The State Board wants to know. Please fill out the following survey on what the ideal qualities for a state superintendent should be at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XM7JHYQ . The survey is sponsored by the State Superintendent search firm, Ray and Associates, Inc.  You have until January 27th, 2016 to provide input. Speaking of the superintendent search….
State Superintendent Search – The priority of this month’s State Board of Education meeting was the superintendent search. The search firm interviewed all the state board members as well as several stakeholder groups including OAGC. Interestingly, OAGC was the only association whose mission is advocacy for children. The other associations are largely focused on education institutions or education professionals.  Other associations interviewed were the Catholic Conference of Ohio, Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators, Ohio Association of Independent Schools, Ohio Association of Community Colleges, Buckeye Association of School Administrators, Ohio Federation of Teachers. Ohio Education association, Ohio Association of School Business Officials, Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools, Ohio Educational Service Center Association, and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio. It seems a little odd that the latter association was interviewed rather than the Ohio Department of Higher Education. The firm will also interview the Ohio 8, the Ohio School Boards Association, the Association of Career and Technical Education and the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators. The search firm spent two hours on Tuesday going over timelines and processes with the state board. One major point of discussion was the salary. All board members along with Ex Officio members Sen. Peggy Lehner and Rep. Andrew Brenner (Senate and House Education Committee Chairs) agreed that Ohio needs to pay our state superintendent more. The state superintendent salary is far lower than most of the urban superintendents in the state.  The April board meeting is the tentative time for the actual selection of a new state superintendent.
