The Concord Review is a National Treasure

When a student is finished with school and enters her adult life, she will be judged for the rest of her life not by her scores on tests of basic skills, but by the quality of her character and the quality of her work. Why, then, are we not focused deeply in our schools by the quality of what students can actually create? As a nation, I believe we vastly underestimate the capacity of students to do beautiful work: work that is complex, sophisticated, accurate, compelling and well-crafted. Work that is important.

The Concord Review presents a stirring vision of what is possible. It is a unique and transformational resource. I have spent the last thirty years collecting, analyzing, curating and speaking about student work. Helping to lead a national educational non-profit, Expeditionary Learning, and teaching at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, I use exemplary student work as the starting place for consideration of standards, of student potential, and of the goals of education.

A conversation grounded in student work is an entirely different, and more valuable conversation—whatever the educational topic. It is one thing to discuss what we think good student research and writing should look like—what standards should define it—but it is quite a different thing, a more powerful thing, to open The Concord Review and analyze what it really can be.

No one has been honoring and presenting exemplary student work to the public longer, and with more care, than Will Fitzhugh and The Concord Review. Every high school in America should have a subscription to this journal, and should be using models from TCR in classrooms to analyze and understand what excellence looks like and how it is achieved.
