Columbus (March 6, 2015) ... The Ohio Academy of Science today announced
plans for the Believe in Ohio

program for the 2015‐2016 school year. Believe in Ohio seeks to develop
Ohio’s next generation of

innovators and entrepreneurs to create the new products and services of the
future through the

application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Believe in Ohio is the only

statewide Ohio student education program to integrate innovation and
entrepreneurship as pathways to

create future jobs.

“In response to requests from middle schools, next year Believe in Ohio
will extend its program so that both

high school (grades 9‐12) and middle school teachers and schools in grades
7‐8 may participate,” said Dr.

Lynn Elfner, CEO Emeritus of The Ohio Academy of Science and Co‐Director of
Believe in Ohio. “While we

are pleased to inspire interest in STEM in younger students, because of the
differences in their ages and

academic achievement, high school and middle school students will
participate in different STEM

Commercialization and Business Plan competitions,” added Elfner.

Next year to avoid conflicts with standardized testing and the turmoil cause
by schools closed due to snow or cold weather, the

Academy will extend the deadline for completion of local school competitions
from March to April 6, 2016.

“Registration for next year’s Believe in Ohio program is now open, and we
encourage teachers and schools to begin planning so

that we can schedule teacher training during June, July and August,”
continued Elfner. Schools may register here:

The first school to commit for 2015‐2016 is Strongsville High School, where
20 teachers are collaborating this school year to

introduce the program to about 400 students from grades 9 to 12. “Despite
the challenges of snow days and testing, our staff

has enthusiastically embraced Believe in Ohio because it’s ‘good for
kids’ and will help prepare them for their future," said Mr.

Steve Deitrick, Strongsville Assistant Principal. “We already have a lot of
good ideas for next year and look forward to making the

Believe in Ohio program an even better experience in 2015‐2016," added
Deitrick.

The Ohio Academy of Science and Entrepreneurial Engagement Ohio developed
the program entitled Believe In Ohio-A STEM

Bridge to Ohio’s Innovation Economy of the Future with support from The
Ohio General Assembly and The Ohio Board of

Regents. Further information on Believe In Ohio is available at

Effective with the 2015-2016 school year, all students in 5th and 6th grades
will now have Genius Hour as part of their regular specials rotation. While
this is not an exclusively gifted service, it is truly innovative to allow
time during the school day to offer students a supportive environment in
which their passions are supported and nurtured.

I am credentialed with my GIS license, and will be the instructor for Genius
Hour. I will be the teacher of record, and the class will be grade based.
We are currently developing a standards-based course syllabus, which will,
among other things detail how students' growth will be evaluated based on
their competencies and project completion. We look forward to the gains
students will realize during our upcoming Genius Hour!

Best,
Karen Wiley
