The gifted intervention specialist should be an IEP team member for the student, and work with regular teachers, and the special education teacher to provide services.

I am from  Perry Local in Stark County.  We have several students with autism as a part of our gifted program. They range from one student who has a full time follow along aide to a student with very mild autism.  According to state law if the student meets the set criteria for a given district then they have to have the same opportunity as other students meeting the criteria.  It isn't always easy but it is right for the students.  The biggest issue we have had was parents of other students.  This would have been an issue with our without gifted service.

Everyone:

A parent moving to southwest Ohio asked me about various local districts' (mandated) services, IEPs and so forth for a gifted child with high-functioning autism. The child is in elementary school. The family also has other children in gifted programs in the family's current state, California, so service to those children also plays into the decision as to where to move and what to expect (or not) with whatever offerings might be available locally in Ohio.
