[Ohiogift] Seeking Contract Language for Teachers of Self-Contained Classes

Thank you for bringing this topic to the forefront. As an educator and board member I support instructional stability based on grade appropriate qualifications. I’m aware of a district in which this happened to an educator who went from 8th grade to 2nd grade. This educator acknowledged that she had difficulty instructing writing to the lower grade, but was too afraid to ask for help in fear that it would tarnish her reputation as an instructor.

If you find such contract language or construct said language, I would be appreciative of receiving same.

Thank you,

Brigitte Green-Churchwell

In districts I'm familiar with, Boards/ Administration, retain the right to place teachers in any area or grade level in which they are licensed. Unfortunately, this has sometimes meant that a high school licensed teacher ( like 7-12 math or English) who gets a gifted endorsement could be placed in a first grade self-contained gifted class, regardless of the fact that this is pretty absurd and seems to set this teacher up for failure. Similarly, it would be ridiculous to have an early childhood licensed teacher with a gifted endorsement teaching tenth grade gifted English or AP physics.
Seniority, rather than qualifications and maximum fit of teachers with students and content, is not the best way to place and assign faculty. This is especially true with AP classes, where deep and advanced CURRENT content knowledge is essential.

Last year we had a lot of bumping and lost two outstanding self-contained teachers. I am looking for any district that might have contract language regarding self-contained classes in that the teachers are protected from bumping due to seniority. We would like to look at this issue with our union.
