For a 6th grader, you could also use the science section of EXPLORE, but I would take that with a grain of salt, as that really tests content-area reading and reasoning skills rather than science mastery per se--much like the ACT science section.

>>We would typically give a 9th or 10th grade national test (Iowa test of Educational Development or something similar), or if the student took the ACT through NUMATS, I would also use the percentile or science on the acceleration scale. We would also give a release version of an 8th grade science OAA to confirm state standards are mastered and to know if there are any specific gaps in content. Of course, we would also want a recent cog score for that part of the Acceleration scale.

>>> I have been asked to help accelerate a student who is taking 6th grade science to 9th grade physical science. What assessments can I use to make sure he is ready for that? If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
