Title: OPS F&W Biological Scientist II – Bat Monitoring Biologist

Description of Duties: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has an exciting opportunity for qualified applicants to advance our knowledge of White-nose Syndrome (WNS) affected bat species in one of the few remaining states not yet directly impacted by the disease. This position will last from early-December to early-September and is an excellent way to further one’s skills working with bat acoustics and telemetry. This is a 40 hour per week position. Work will be split between Marianna, Florida and Brooksville, Florida, and there is optional housing available.

This position will participate in the following activities: surveying Florida’s caves and culverts to determine bat occupancy and abundance, using radio telemetry to determine winter movement and roost use, conducting WNS surveillance, and assisting in executing Florida’s Long-term Bat Monitoring Program by placing and maintaining acoustic detectors statewide, processing calls using Kaleidoscope Pro, and submitting corresponding data to NABat. Additional responsibilities include manually vetting calls, taking measurements of culvert and cave conditions, conducting vegetation surveys at bat roosts, ensuring that standard WNS decontamination procedures are followed, collaborating with Florida’s Long-term Bat Monitoring Program partners, and working with landowners and land managers to coordinate property access. Duties may also include recording bat emergences from cave roosts, assisting with authoring technical reports, managing databases, and providing educational programs or materials on WNS and bats in Florida.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Applicants should possess a B.S. degree, preferably in wildlife biology or similar field, and should have experience working with bats. Must have experience placing acoustic detectors and using call identification software. Experience manually vetting calls is preferred. Must be able to carry-out extensive field work in a variety of situations, including working with acoustic equipment in muggy, buggy weather, as well as working in culverts or caves, including rappelling and crawling through tight spaces for extended periods. Recent pre-exposure rabies vaccination or minimum recommended titer level is recommended. Knowledge of cave conservation, bat biology, bat conservation, and species identification (acoustically and/or in hand) is preferred. Experience with Kaleidoscope Pro, vegetation surveys, radio telemetry, MS Excel or Access, data loggers, GPS, and database management is also preferred. Applicants should have strong organizational and communication skills and be able to work cooperatively with diverse colleagues, partners, landowners, and citizens.

Type of Position: This is a seasonal, OPS position

Pay Rate: $16.00 per hour.
