Hello All!

My name is Heather Custer, and I am a graduate student at Arkansas State University. I recently completed my fourth and final field season of tracking female Indiana bats from hibernacula to summer grounds in Arkansas and I am now in the process of finalizing my thesis. Recently, I was selected for the Directorate Fellows Program working out of the USFWS field office in Frankfort, Kentucky. This summer, my research with the program will be focused on collection of and building an eastern U.S. bat acoustic reference call library that will be used to evaluate the software accuracy for the USFWS acoustic testing. In addition to evaluating software accuracy, building large call libraries is helpful for several other purposes such as the first step in development of a monitoring/acoustic program in an understudied bat community, as a tool for researchers to reference when manually identifying acoustic calls, and to build and improve automated classifiers.

I am reaching out to contact individuals who may have reference calls that could be shared to support this library and/or those that could potentially facilitate recording of calls this coming season. Reference calls where the species is definitively known from physical identity of the specimen (e.g., collected using hand release, zip line, light tagging, roost emergence, or flight chamber methods) are preferred, but passively recorded call files from known maternity or bachelor colonies are also a priority. All bat species that co-occur within the Indiana bat range are preferred.

If you have an interest in sharing acoustic call files in an effort to support a call library, or have any questions about this effort, please contact me by email at heather.custer at smail.astate.edu<mailto:heather.custer at smail.astate.edu>. I appreciate your consideration and help with this effort and feel free to forward this email to other potentially interested parties who may not be on the mailing list.

Best,

Heather Custer
