M.S. Assistantship

The Department of Biology at Pittsburg State University is recruiting an M.S. student to join an ongoing project to study the population dynamics and habitat use of gray bats in southeast Kansas. The student will work with Dr. Andrew George and will use a variety of approaches including mark-recapture, radio-telemetry, infrared-video, and microclimate-monitoring, with emphasis on assessing susceptibility to white-nose syndrome (WNS). The student will be supported by a graduate research assistantship with full tuition waiver, monthly stipend, and student health insurance.

Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s degree in a related field by May 2020, and have a GPA and GRE scores that are competitive. Previous experience working with bats is required. Preference will be given to individuals with demonstrated experience handling bats and operating mist-nets, harp traps, and radio-telemetry equipment. Possession of a federal permit and/or prior rabies vaccination would be helpful, though not required for admittance. Previous experience with GIS and data analysis in R is also desirable. Applicants should be able to work collaboratively and independently and should have strong communication skills. A valid U.S. driver’s license is required.

This position will require working alone after dark in remote areas and occasionally entering cramped spaces, including a city stormwater system. The applicant should be in good physical condition to carry equipment and to climb or crawl through culverts and manholes.

Applicants should submit 1) a cover letter describing your interest in graduate studies and previous research experience, 2) a curriculum vita, 3) copies of transcripts, 4) GRE scores, and 5) contact information for 3 references. Send materials as an email attachment to Dr. Andrew George adgeorge[at]pittstate[dot]edu. Unofficial transcripts and GRE scores are acceptable at this time but official documents will be required for formal admission to the university.

Review of applications will begin on January 31 and continue until the position is filled.
