Subject: [MWBWG] Help Requested! MYLU fecal/blood samples needed to study stress responses to WNS

Hello all,

My name is Lydia Nixon, and I am a PhD student working with Dr. Erin Gillam at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. I am interested in stress responses to White-nose Syndrome in free-ranging little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus, MYLU). For this, I need biological samples from MYLU grouped into four categories: naïve to WNS, currently infected with WNS, recuperating from WNS, and recovered from WNS. Fecal samples should satisfy my needs, but blood samples are preferable, if possible. (Both feces and blood would be fantastic as well!)

In all cases, ideal samples would be from individual adult MYLU that, if female, are not lactating or heavily pregnant (ie, the fetal skull is not easily felt through the abdomen). Aside from those currently infected with or recovering from WNS, all sampled bats should appear healthy and without injury. I can send materials for sample collection and storage, if requested, and I do have a small travel budget should you prefer I do my own sampling.

Here's a brief clarification of the categories I’ve listed above:

  * MYLU naïve to WNS – bats sampled reside in states/provinces where WNS is not present
  * MYLU currently infected with WNS – Pd is readily apparent on the sampled bats; I imagine that blood would be the only sampling possible here (if allowed)
  * MYLU recuperating from WNS – bats have tissue damage from WNS present at the time of sampling; sampling would be soon after emergence
  * MYLU recovered from WNS – no tissue damage present but the bats are known to have had the disease during the winter; sampling would be later in the spring/summer after healing is complete

Please feel free to contact me (lydia.nixon at ndsu.edu<mailto:lydia.nixon at ndsu.edu>) if you’d be able to help me in obtaining these samples. I am happy to answer questions and to send additional information and methods.

Thank you and warm wishes from frozen North Dakota!

Sincerely,

Lydia C. Olson Nixon /\._./\
