Subject: [MWBWG] 2019 Indiana Bat Survey Guidelines

Hello all!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has finalized the 2019 version of the Range-wide Indiana Bat Survey Guidelines (attached). The guidelines have also been posted to our primary Indiana bat survey web page (see links below).

Please note the following regarding the 2019 IBat survey guidelines:

• The Service’s Indiana Field Office has assessed the recently collected 2018-2019 winter population data for the Indiana bat. Observed population declines were not sufficient to "flip" our previously defined WNS triggers for increasing the survey level of effort (LOE) in the Midwest or Ozark-Central RUs. Therefore, the LOE for mist netting (and acoustics) has not changed from the 2018 guidelines.

• As in previous years, these guidelines may also be used to survey for the northern long-eared bat.

• A new table summarizing the standard survey seasons was added (p. 12).

• We added Appendix G -The Outer-tier Guidance (p. 52) and Appendix H - Potential Hibernaculum Survey Guidance (p. 55) as “pilot” guidelines last year. We have now finalized and fully adopted them with only a few minor edits.

• Several other new edits (e.g., “data-division ratio must be set to 8” for ZC detectors, p. 32) and clarifications (e.g., see p. 6) were made throughout the document and appear in blue font.

Other related items…

• We are awaiting Dept. of Interior review/approval regarding a few proposed changes to our electronic bat reporting worksheets. In the interim, the 2018 versions of these files remain on our Indiana bat survey web page. Please check the website before submitting federal permit reports and associated bat data to insure that you are using the most current worksheet.

• Before proposing and/or conducting an acoustic survey, you should always check our acoustic web page to determine the current status of approved versions of auto-ID software programs. FYI – The USGS is presently in the process of retesting some of the older previously approved acoustic software versions (i.e., BCID and EchoClass) to determine if they meet our updated testing standards. The list of approved programs is subject to change pending the outcome of these ongoing tests. A new version of Kaleidoscope Pro (v. 5.1.0) has recently been tested and passed.

• Please consider helping us obtain more known-species calls this summer!!

In the interest of improving the overall number and diversity of call files included in the USFWS & USGS’s Master Test Library, the Services encourage qualified individuals to voluntarily contribute additional call files (full-spectrum and zero-crossing) of known species. Call files will be considered for inclusion if species identity is unequivocally known. More details and a call-submittal form are available at the bottom of the acoustic ID software page at the link provided in the previous bullet.

Please feel free to share this email with your partners and other interested parties and let one of us know if you have any questions. As always, thank you for your patience and best wishes for a safe and productive summer survey season.

Sincerely,

Mike, Robyn, and Andy
