Subject: [MWBWG] Request for migratory tree bat hair and tissue samples

Impacts of wind-turbine mortality on tree-roosting bat populations in North America

Dr. David M. Nelson (dnelson at umces.edu<mailto:dnelson at umces.edu>) and Dr. Paul Gugger (pgugger at umces.edu<mailto:pgugger at umces.edu>)

Since 2011 we have been attempting to address whether the widespread mortality of migratory tree-roosting bats, such as hoary, red, and silver-haired bats, at wind-energy facilities in North America is sustainable. To investigate this topic we have used a novel combination of stable hydrogen isotope and genetic data from turbine-killed bats (e.g. Pylant et al. 2016, Ecological Applications) to assess the geographic origins and population dynamics of these species. In a new project (funded by USFWS) that we are conducting with collaborators at Ohio State University we are expanding the scope of this work in several ways: (1) increasing the geographic extent of our sampling to as much of North America as possible, (2) use of genomics (e.g. Sovic et al. 2016, PeerJ) to more precisely constrain effective population size and subpopulation structure, and (3) use of other markers (e.g. trace elements) to attempt to better source bats to their regions of origin.

These efforts require preserved wing tissue for genomic analysis and hair samples for stable isotope and trace element analysis. We are interested in partnering with federal and state agencies, as well as the wind industry, to obtain such samples and conduct this research. We will not include the name of the facility where samples were collected in any publications/reports. We are particularly interested in obtaining samples from the central and southeast portions of North America, as well as Alaska and Canada.

If you have questions or are interested in providing samples, please contact:
