POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Job Classification:            2 Hourly Assistants– 40 hours per week
Position:                             Bat Field Technicians
Employer:                          Illinois Natural History Survey, a Division of the Prairie Research Institute (PRI)
Location:                            Champaign, Illinois

Duties & Responsibilities: Searching for bats under bridges and performing bat habitat assessments, including identifying potential bat roost trees.  Traveling throughout Illinois to complete field work.  The candidate will prioritize taskings, determine routes to field sites, edit and write reports.  Potential for mist netting bats and trapping small mammals dependent on project taskings.  Overnight work may be required.  Expect to work Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week.  No housing is provided, but there are many summer sublets available (college town).

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology, Wildlife, Natural Resources, or related field.  Previous experience conducting field work is preferred.  Meticulous data collection and the ability to work efficiently and effectively is expected.  Ability to identify trees, previous experience with GPS units, and ability to identify bats of Illinois are all preferred, but we will provide training as necessary.  Ability to read and navigate from maps is highly desirable.  Rabies shots preferred but are not required; only technicians with rabies shots will be permitted to handle animals.  The candidate must be physically capable of hiking to sites, carrying up to 40 lbs. of field equipment, and working outside under adverse field conditions, including, but not limited to biting insects, rain, heat, humidity, and uneven terrain.  Ability to work with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.  Candidate must have a valid driver’s license

Salary:  $12.00 per hour.

Available:  May 1, 2018 through August 31, 2018. Start date is flexible and end date may get extended if we have additional work.
