Looking for Small Summer Colonies of Little Brown Bats (Myotis lucifugus) for WNS Research
Our research group is looking for places where Little Brown Bats can be found consistently roosting in aggregations of 20-40 individuals during late-summer. In particular, we seek groups of individual bats we can fit with microclimate-monitoring ‘batpacks’ that they will carry from their summer roosts, to their winter hibernacula, and then back to the initial roost the following spring. In particular, ideal study sites would meet as many of the following criteria as possible:

1. Contain little-brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) where species identity has been previously confirmed

2. Small-moderate size (20-40 individuals).

3. Easy to visualize and capture bats (e.g., bat boxes, attics, few openings)

4. Established roosts that have been monitored multiple years

5. Approximate autumn departure and spring arrival dates known

6. Able to be monitored by skilled person permitted to handle bats in the state
This information is requested in support of our US Fish and Wildlife Service funded project entitled: “Understanding Regional Patterns of Vulnerability to White-Nose Syndrome Using Bats to Sample Environmental Conditions of Hibernacula” (see attached project synopsis).
If you have knowledge of roosts that show potential for this study, please contact Ted Weller (tweller at fs.fed.us<mailto:tweller at fs.fed.us>). Roosts need not meet all criteria for consideration, please let us know about all roosts that might work for this study.
Although we will not determine specific winter roost sites, summary data of environmental conditions experienced by bats will be shared for local use with those who identify roosts for this project.

Thank you for your help in understanding the winter roosting ecology of bats.
