BAT ACOUSTICS COURSE
HANNIBAL, MISSOURI
SEPTEMBER 13 TO 17, 2018

We are excited to announce a comprehensive bat Acoustics Course at the Sodalis Preserve in Hannibal, Missouri. As part of the unique course, we will harp trap and record calls from the largest hibernaculum for Indiana bats! Additionally, the hibernaculum houses endangered gray bats and other Midwest species. Our instructors Chris Corben and Kim Livengood have in depth knowledge of bat bioacoustics, and decades of experience with detectors and bat call identification.

9/13 – A Fee-Free learning day where participants will be introduced to the new Anabat Insight analysis software and get hands-on experience with the Swift, Express, Walkabout, SD2, and Roost Logger detectors. We will end the day by taking detectors into the field to record a variety of free-flying bats, including MYSO and MYGR. Those interested in further instruction will stay for the Comprehensive Acoustics Course that will follow, which includes a night of harp trapping at the hibernaculum. Please Register as attendance is limited.

9/14 to 9/17 – As part of the Comprehensive Acoustic Course, participants will take part in a combination of classroom and field training to gain understanding of bat bioacoustics and how to conduct effect acoustic surveys. Participants will also get handling experience with MYSO, MYGR, and other cave species with this unique harp trap effort at one of the largest endangered bat hibernacula in the United States. Registration for the course is $1850.

HANDS-ON FIELD TRAINING. We will spend three nights in the field practicing survey skills, covering topics that include proper survey methods, including detector deployment and settings for various situations and active monitoring of free flying bats. During one evening, we will harp trap for bats at Sodalis Preserve in Hannibal, which is home to over 150,000+ bats, including the Indiana and gray bat. We will provide hands-on instruction during recordings of hand-released and free-flying bats.

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. Participants will be introduced to bat bioacoustics and gain a more in-depth understanding of detectors, bat identification using both Zero Crossings and Full Spectrum recordings, and available analysis programs. Each day, we will build on our bioacoustics knowledge in class, learning more and more about bat acoustics, manual identification, and data analysis. Participants will gain proficiency in using AnalookW, Anabat Insight, BCID, Kaleidoscope Pro, and Echoclass. Participants will get hands on experience processing large datasets, effective use of filters and automatic identification programs, and cover tools for creating data summary tables and figures for biological reports… and much, much more!

HOUSING AND MEALS. There are several hotels in the Hannibal area. We will have a group rate at the Best Western on the River. Meals are not included.

We keep class sizes small and strive to provide participants with tailored learning to all levels of experience. We enjoy answering questions, no matter how basic or complex, as there are always lessons to be learned in the rapidly advancing field of bat bioacoustics. Please contact Kim Livengood at kim at titley-scientific.us<mailto:kim at titley-scientific.us> or 573-442-8745 to register or for more information about this unique hands-on training opportunity.

Student and group discounts available. Please inquire about other upcoming available courses if you are unable to participate in our Hannibal course.

Titley Scientific offers a 10% coupon to participants for equipment purchase.
