Hello all!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is happy to provide you with the 2018 revised Indiana bat survey guidance (attached). As in previous years, the guidance can also be used to survey for the northern long-eared bat.

Please note the following changes for 2018:
• based on more recent acoustic information from known summer maternity colonies across the range we have made the following change:
o acoustic survey level of effort (LOE) for "block" projects (i.e., non-linear) has changed from 4 detector nights/123 ac. to 8 detector nights/123 ac range-wide.
• to improve consistency between linear and block project LOE we have made the following changes:
o netting survey LOE for linear projects has changed from 6 net nights/1 km to 10 net nights/1 km for Northeast and Appalachian Recovery Units.
o netting survey LOE for linear projects has changed from 4 net nights/1 km to 2 net nights/1 km for Midwest and Ozark-Central Recovery Units.
• there are no changes to the netting LOE for non-linear/block projects anywhere in the range
• we have also made the following changes based on internal/external interest/comments:
o extended the validity period of negative survey results from a min. of 2 years to a min. of 5 yrs.
o added a new appendix (App. G) containing a "pilot" range-wide protocol for how to conduct surveys of potential hibernacula (range-wide standardized guidelines had not previously been available). Our team is seeking further feedback from FOs and the larger bat community on this new appendix.
o added a new appendix (App. H) that explains "pilot" methods for when additional P/A surveys may be conducted within the "outer-tier" of a 5-mile buffer of a known Indiana bat capture record. Our team is seeking further feedback from FOs and the larger bat community on this new appendix.
Please share feel free to share this email/the 2018 guidelines with others that may be interested.

As always, the current guidance will be available (not posted yet) at https://www.fws.gov/midwest/Endangered/mammals/inba/inbasummersurveyguidance.html<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fws.gov%2Fmidwest%2FEndangered%2Fmammals%2Finba%2Finbasummersurveyguidance.html&data=02%7C01%7Ctccarter%40bsu.edu%7C92b50cce3ca84253431208d5a17a5f1e%7C6fff909f07dc40da9e30fd7549c0f494%7C0%7C0%7C636592470135404084&sdata=bLNgGOdp5agKyysaO0UAxzh4Ozn27WED61D3vK1wBdk%3D&reserved=0>

Also, an addendum to our original white paper (available at link above) explaining our revisions to the survey LOEs (mentioned above) is attached and will soon be available at this link as well. Additionally, newly revised Section 10 Bat Reporting Worksheets for 2018 will be available at the same link. We anticipate both of these documents and the 2018 worksheets will be available on the R3 Indiana bat survey guidance website around the middle of next week.

Please let one of us know if you have any questions or wish to provide constructive feedback on the new pilot appendices etc. Thank you for for your patience and for all you do for our bats.

Sincerely,

Mike, Robyn, and Andy
