Dear MWBWG, NEBWG and SBDN Members,

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2017 Range-wide Indiana Bat Summer Survey Guidelines are now available on the Indiana Bat Summer Survey Guidance webpage
http://www.fws.gov/midwest/Endangered/mammals/inba/inbasummersurveyguidance.html
(You may need to refresh your browser or clear your browser cache to ensure you’re seeing the updated info). Changes in the text from the 2016 survey guidelines appear in light blue font throughout the 2017 document. Most of the changes were clarifications this year.

NOTE: The 2017 Indiana Bat Summer Survey Guidelines may again be used for presence/probable absence surveys for the federally threatened northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) throughout its U.S. range during the 2017 summer survey season.

The 2017 region-specific reporting spreadsheets and a multi-regional instruction file are also available on the Service’s Indiana Bat Summer Survey Guidance webpage. http://www.fws.gov/midwest/Endangered/mammals/inba/inbasummersurveyguidance.html. In addition to copies of traditional written survey reports, federal permit holders are now required to annually submit their bat survey data (e.g., mist net, acoustic, harp trap and emergence surveys) and roost data using the Service's standardized region-specific Excel worksheets. NOTE: Due to reductions in bat populations, due to White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) and other threats, the Service is requesting that information on all bat observations (i.e., captures, roost counts, and acoustic detections) of all bat species be submitted, regardless of current federal status.

Lastly, constructive feedback on the 2017 survey guidelines and/or the permit-reporting spreadsheets is encouraged and may be provided to your local field office and/or your regional bat survey coordinator(s) at any time.

Thank you and have a great bat survey season!!

The USFWS Bat Survey and Permit Reporting Teams
