Don't miss out on the last chance of the season to get hands-on training with bat survey techniques!

Join Bat Survey Solutions in western Kentucky to learn, build on or expand your bat capture and acoustic survey skills.

At our field sites in Mammoth Cave National Park, students will have unprecedented opportunities to capture and record all eastern U.S. bat species.

Survey Techniques Include:

  *   harp traps
  * single-, double-, and triple-high mist nets
  * bat detector use, deployment, and data analysis
  *   bat handling and identification
  * banding and other marking techniques
  * radio-tracking for roosting and foraging studies
  *   infra-red and thermal video-monitoring
  *   Internal cave surveys
  * PIT tagging for long-term RFID-assisted population studies
  *   data processing
  *   WNS disinfection techniques

Acoustic survey methods using bat detectors are heavily featured during this class. Each day we will cover lessons and demonstrations on:

  * active monitoring - at dusk and while using spotlights and light-tags
  * passive stationary deployments - single-night or long-term data collection
  * mobile acoustic-survey efforts - designing to interpreting transect routes
Students may bring their own equipment and learn to use it better, or borrow from our array of the most up-to-date loaner equipment and test drive it in the field before they invest in their own gear. We teach programming and deployment scenarios for:

  * Binary Acoustic Technologies AR-125/150, ARfg, and miniMIC
  *   Pettersson D500x and M500
  * Titley AnaBat Express, Walkabout, and Swift
  *   Wildlife Acoustics SongMeter 2, 2+, 3, 4-FS, 4-ZC, and EchoMeter Touch.

Students are empowered to micro-site their equipment and collect their own recordings. Then participants are guided thru the process of interpreting classifier outputs, manually confirming or rejecting automated species ID's for an entire survey period, or how to tease out just their species of interest. Acoustic data management, analysis, and species identification techniques are taught using all popular Auto-ID software package, with a emphasis on manual vetting. Full-working trial or demo copies of software are provided for all students and include:

  *   SonoBat
  *   Kaleidoscope Pro
  *   BCID
  *   Echoclass
  *   AnaLook
Eight days and seven nights of lectures, demonstrations, and field practicums are led by experts in the field with a combined 100-years of experience.

Instructors for this venue include:

Janet Tyburec (Bat Survey Solutions, LLC), who has personally taught more than 2,700 wildlife biologists, land managers, and students while presenting over 150 training workshops since 1992.
Chris Corben, inventor of the ubiquitous AnaBat system and developer of the Analook viewer software, will share decades of knowledge offering up tips and methods for better recordings, identifying bats on the wing, and making the connection between bat behavior and the call shapes appearing on screen.
Kim Livengood (Titley Scientific) instructor of AnaBat & AnaLook-focused workshops worldwide for over a decade, a U.S.-based representative for Titley, and expert user of recording gear to survey bats.
Nick Szewczak (SonoBat), part of the development team for SonoBat, lead programmer for SonoBatLIVE, and expert in general IT and computer/software support.
John Chenger (Bat Conservation and Management), whose company conducts bat research using trapping, tracking, acoustic, and video monitoring techniques but also builds and supplies tools to facilitate bat surveys.
