Bat Research Technician

General Description
One research technician needed to assist Master’s student working on bat research project studying Fall/Winter roosting ecology in Northeast Arkansas. Research involves using mist nets and telemetry equipment to locate winter roost trees in the bottomland hardwood forest of the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge, AR.

Primary duties
-Track bats with telemetry equipment
-Catch bats in mist nets
-Collect data on the roost trees and vegetation plots
-Deploy and maintain acoustic monitoring equipment
-Conduct roost exit counts

Period and salary
-Approximately $1300/month
-Generally 4-5 days a week but working days may be weekend days
**The work may require long hours in the field (including some work at night) in a swamp environment, under adverse weather conditions.  Individuals should consider their cold weather field gear and equip themselves with insulated waders, muck boots, wool socks, gloves, etc. **
-Housing can be provided on-site at no cost to applicant
-Work begins Early October and continues through Early January (there is some flexibility in the schedule)

Required Qualifications
-In pursuit or possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology or related field
-Previous relevant field experience including at least one season of telemetry work
-Applicant must be willing to work weekends
-Applicant must be in good physical condition
-Applicant must possess GPS, map reading, and orienteering skills
-Ability to work alone and in groups
-Ability to conduct themselves safely when boating or moving through swamp in cold conditions
Preferred Qualifications
-Experience driving a 4WD truck, ATV and/or small engine boat
-Candidates wishing to handle bats are required to obtain rabies vaccinations or provide a recent titer check (from last 2 years). Preference to those vaccinated.
-Ability to identify tree species of Arkansas bottomlands
-Experience with or knowledge of bats, particularly Southeastern Myotis and/or Rafinesque’s Big-Eared Bats
